Fast 6mm for Hunting

Would like to build a fast 6mm. Want to hunt with it suppressed and would like a barrel around 20". I was thinking 6 SAUM or 6 UM. What would you recommend and why? Want to shoot the 115 Dtac.

Thanks!

Edit: please add expected velocity of the 115 gn bullet from a 20" barrel - I'm ignorant to the performance of all of these different cartridges!

Seems counterproductive with a 20” barrel. But the 6 UM 30 deg is available from adg brass and would be the easy button. It can get near 3200 fps out of a 20” with that bullet
I want to be able to sneak through the timber hunting and not blow my ear drums out. Recoil isn't a concern with a 6mm suppressed, so why not burn more powder to try to get some of the lost velocity back from the shorter barrel.

Just do it. It'll work out great. If you're in the timber, your range is limited, so a few FPS doesn't matter.

I just shot my suppressed 240 Weatherby a few days ago. *That would be similar to a 6mm-284 or 6mm-06. 24" barrel with a 6" can wasn't crazy long but I don't have that thick of timber to sneak through.

Heads up. It's still going to be loud. Not blow your ear drums out loud. But, not hearing safe. You'll really want hearing pro at the range. I have some very big, very effective suppressors, but even on my 6mm Creedmoor the supersonic crack of the bullet is technically too loud for repeated exposure. You'll knock BD's off but a big 6mm will start very high.

6-284. Advice, go with more bbl and less suppressor if you can. I bought 9" Thunderbeast's, and should have gone with 5" and kept a few inches of BBL.......unless you are in a competition to see who's can is the quietist with your buddies, cuz you wont know the difference without a DBL meter.

Just my .02,
Tod

6x284
Why?
capable of 1000 ft/lbs at 1000 yds without blowing bullets and only needs an 8 Tw
115's at 3400 fps
with only 51-53 grns of powder with the right barrel length
1.5" to 2" groups at 600 (1/3 or less MOA accuracy)

Rather fast 7.5 twist bolt action 6mm ARC pushing a 90 gr CX has been plenty fast for my use. 2900 fps with the 90 gr CX has performed well in my experience. Have also used the 108 gr Elite hunter with good results. Think I was doing 2780 fps with that one. 22" Pac-nor barrel has treated me well on the CZ527.

Since these threads are usually all about everyone’s favorite…
I’m shooting the 80 grain TTSX @3700+ in my 240 Wby right now, it’s shoots fine with the 105 Berger also. It’s loud and fast with the 26” barrel! LOL

TreillW-

Howdy!

I’m looking at muzzle velocity and “ expansion ratio “ ( ER ) charts provided by ballistician Homer Powley ( “ The Powley Papers, Guns & Ammo 1974 Annual )…..

General info:
For an example 6mm caliber 28” barrel, Powley listed an expansion ratio of 4.
Powley’s chart suggested a powder charge wt of 75gr max ( IMR powders used ).
I point out….Homer did not bother listing expansion ratios below 4, likely because such ER’s indicate a gun that is comparatively inefficient @ converting chemical energy into kinetic energy.

Additional info:
Powley listed a Mv of 3,890fps being achievable, when shooting an 85gr 6mm bullet; from a gun w/ a 26” barrel giving an expansion ratio of 4.

I know you said a 6mm, but to me the large capacity 6mm cases are not a great match for a 20” barrel. Consider a 25x47 L or 250 savage 10 twist, something in that neighborhood. You could efficiently hurl 100-120gr bullets and have a great hunting round! —Wendel
