farthest pdog kill with a .204

does anyone know what the farthest proven prairie dog kill is with a .204 ruger?? has anyone even tried a 1000 yard shot with a .204? I know for a fact its possible out to 800 yards and a 20br has for sure already proven its capable of the task. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

U R right about the 20 BR. Voldoc did it and here is his story from

Ive hit pdogs at 850 but it took 5 to 10 shots.
Now ive hit them at 500 to 600 yards 1 shot 1 kill.

Last year was my first time out with my new set up. 1.250 strait 1-8 twist pac-nor. 55 bergers. Dogs that are inside of 600 are pretty much one shot kills. On calm days!!!! Did one kill at 823 yards 4 shots, that was the limit on that town. This year I will try for that 1,000 yard kill. I have a town that makes a bowl from one side to the other its 920 to 1075. I do think its possible with some luck and a calm day. I did take this gun to a 1000 yard range and was able to break clay birds.

It is possible because a fellow shot a 17 caliber at Williamsport 1000 yard benchrest and shot 7 to 8 inch 10 shot groups at 1000. He did this a bunch of times in the 17 pound light gun class. I also know that a couple of the guys that shoot there shot some Prairie doge in the 900 plus yard range with the 20 Vartarg. Matt

It is definitely possible. Shooting at targets can show one what the gun and load are capable of, but shooting in the field is more of an eye-opener as to how difficult such shots are in real field conditions. It often equates to how successful one is in obtaining accurate laser readings on flat terrain, and in knowing where the bullet will impact from having previously shot the load at all the various ranges prior to the trip - then making all the appropriate adjustments for altitude and air temperature, etc. Even when all of these things are done, most guys do not set up wind flags down their shooting corridor to the critters so oftentimes, the first shot is more of a "weather report". For a shooter with a lot of opportunities and good preparation and conditions, it can happen. I'm going on another extened trip in April to beat my long range record - which I failed to do last time with a .204, despite considerable preparation and a lot af rounds fired. My hat is off to those who plug them at 1,000 with ANY small to medium cartridge!

Being a 20 cal slut.....20 VT...20 PT..20-222...had a 20BR.....
which is now the 20-222....ran the BR two summers or so..9 twist...28" tube w/55 Bergers....18# table gun...made p/dog kills out to 800..but the 31 gr charge...got hot fast..even with a no taper large shank Savage target action set up..then take the 20 PT with 4-5 gr less charge & take dogs off the same mound at 800 yds.....40 V max....as mentioned inside 600 yds on a calm day...dialed in..dogs are removed easily with one shot....the modest 20 VT has gone to 600 yds...anyone who has spent a day with the 20-222 will have to admit it is the most mild mannered precision p/dog cartridge in existence...23/H322 & 40 V max......9 twist barrel...(the ole BR)

WOW.... that sounds like fun... I need to take my 20-250 AI with 55 Bergers for a trip out there and try them Pdogs this summer... but with milder loads.

And my 204 Ruger needs some long range airing out as well...

I'm getting excited...LOL

My 15yr old son got one last week at a laser ranged 412 yds. 32gr v-max with a stout load of benchmark out of a browning x-bolt.
