FART or Thumbler?

With all seriousness, I just watched 3 video's on the fart and I want one soon. It is way ahead of the thumblers. CED has an acrylic one that is exceptionally nice but more expensive and doesn't run as true as the fart.

I like the built in media separator on the fart. Motor and gear durability are the question to me. However, at $160.00, including 5 lbs of pins, it would be worth a shot if I didn't already have a thumbler.

i can't stop laughing and tears are running down my face!

Merry Christmas, this made my night

Went to Amazon. Price is now $197. Only 1 left in stock. That's a lot of money for a FART. The plus to the equation however, is after reading the reviews, the FART is a lot quieter than most vibratory tumblers.

Still trying to figure out how to sift the solids from the dirty liquids from a FART.

They make a magnet thingy that lifts the pins out. Got one for my FART. Works great. Get a Fart! You won't be disappointed. 8)

Wal Mart.com has them for $160.00

I use a piece of cloth draped over a colander,
1. I put the colander over a bucket.
2. With the strainer cover on the FART I dump the water and as many pins as possible in the colander.
3. Then I put enough clean water back inside the FART (where the brass is) to rinse the brass and stop the acidic action of the Lemi-Shine.
4. I then dump the rinsing water over the pins. At that point I still have brass and some pins inside the FART,
5. Then I get my trusty RCBS media separator and dump the contents of the FART in it and give it a few spins.
6. At that point all of the pins have fallen out. Then I take a small towel and put it in the media separator with the brass and give it a few twirls. That dries the outside of the cases.
7. If I'm in a hurry I put the brass on a baking sheet and place them in the kitchen oven on "Warm/150 degrees" and let them warm for 30 minutes.
8. Then process them as usual.

Once you've tried it you'll never go back to the old way.

what about the brass dryers stainless tumbling media or CED sells, do they work, rather than in the oven or hjanging upside down on a nail

Jefferson

I have no idea what CED sells are. But if you find the oven method unappealing, another user here put his brass in a 5 gallon bucket and then suspended a hair drier over it. He said that worked for him and kept him out of his wife's kitchen. Luckily my wife in not that territorial.

Food dehydrator works good for drying your brass.

I Live in California. I can use sunshine very effectively to dry my brass. . All I have to worry about is loosing my brass in the cracks of the earth caused by the earthquakes. Lately, this is not so funny.

Anyone tested these side by side,or experience with both,to see which might be a better unit as far as durability/value?

Andrew

Andrew,
Back in May, when I first inquired about stainless pin tumbling I was a bit skeptical, so I started by asking questions on the following thread http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3844782.0 , just like you're doing.
If you read through it, I tried the Red Thumbler but send it back to Midway and replaced it with the FART ;D.

If you have the money in the budget I highly recommend the FART. The instructions that come with the FART are downright wrong and there are a few minor issues to deal with, because the FART does such a good job, ie: you should anneal before you tumble your brass, if you don't anneal then your fine. The instructions say to tumble for 3 hours. That's way way too long, and it causes peening. So tumble for 1 hour max. And if you can afford an extra 5 pound bag of pins (about $45) get them. They are worth it. Spending about $250 to clean brass sounds like a lot of money, but the results are outstanding and well worth it, not to mention the fact that the cost going forward is minimal, dish soap and Lemi-Shine which cost even less than dish soap and lasts many times longer. You can get both at Walmart/Target.

Kindest regards,

Joe

i wonder ...
does the ss pins harden the brass

Maybe, but I think you'd have to run a batch for a week to do that!

does the fart build up gase from chemicals

You mean build internal pressure because of some chemical reaction going on?

does the fart leak any of the liquids

Increased internal pressure's not yet caused a problem with leaks in my Thumbler's B. I typically start with fairly warm water so as it cools during a batch run it ought to be maybe decreasing internal pressure a bit... making leaks less of a possibility. With the rubber-on-rubber seal it'd take quite a bit of pressure - or a few loose clamping knobs I think - before a leak manages to manifest itself.
