Falling in love with my brand new Eliseo CSS R5 Repeater

Today, I took my brand new R5 rifle,stock made by Gary Eliseo with Pierce Engineering Action and gunsmithing, and Krieger barrel) to a shooting ranch for the first time. I was shooting on 200 yards and my very first shot was on target. I shot one more time in the same spot and cleaned my rifle. I shot another three shots to find the center of the target. I cleaned the rifle again and shot my first 5-shot group. Looking through my scope, it all looked like one hole. I got a big smile on my face and could not get any happier. When I got home and measured the group, it measured less than 0.350". Bummer.... I was looking forward to the challenge of finding a good load for this rifle but it seems like now I will have to look for another challenge ... My load was Berger 80gr Varmint Bullets, 31gr Varget, Remington 6.5 primer, and bullet was seated 0.015" in lands.

Great shooting. The Berger 80s also shoot incredibly tight in my 8-twist PacNor 6BR.

With 200-yard groups like that, maybe you should compete in a registered benchrest match.... That's a very competitive group at 200 yards.

You may laugh, but nobody was laughing after Jerry Tierney won the NBRSA 600-yard BR Nationals with his R5 Tubegun.

For readers: Because of the angle of the bag-rider and the weight of the gun, Milan's R5 would not be legal in Light Varmint or Heavy Varmint Class,I'm assuming Milan's rifle, with scope, weighs more than 13.5 lbs.) Also, one good group, obviously does not make an Agg. But the reality is that winning 200-yard 5-target Aggs in Benchrest matches typically run slightly under a measured 1/2", the average of five, 5-shot groups.

The rear bag rider attachement came from CSS. I only modified it a little. I lowered my rifle about 1". I also made my own design, which allows me to make fine adjustment on my rear bag when shooting from a bipod and to keep the front of my rifle as low as possible. Looking at the cartridges, am I correct to assume this is a standard 6mmBR Norma?

The two bag-riders above... which one is your design and which was made by Gary?

Yes, this is a standard 6mmBR Norma, my favorite cartrige. The picture on the left hand side shows Gary's design and the one on the right shows mine. Gary's design works fine, I just wanted to be able to make adjustments on my stock when I go on my bipod from one groove to the other. In addition, I like to keep my bipod as low as possible.

i wish they had that bag rider when i built my tube gun.i made mine out of delrin,i added a little angle on the front of the 1' adj.bar down to the 1'delrin bag rider.it's tapered down to 5/8 at the bottom.the front 3'is delrin too,real slick on the bags,my gun is the R1 in 6.5 x 47..........jim

Is this gun glued or just bolted in. I'm debating a tube gun and that is yet another choice that has to be made.

The beauty of a Eliseo stock is that you don't glue the action in.. there are the two action screws on the bottom and then there are four pressure screws on the top, 2 on each side of the action.. that take out and slop from the action to the interior of the action tube.. I have three of these things and wouldn't have it any other way.

I know that you don't have to but there is the school of thought out there that it will make the gun more accurate, just like bedding and sleeving an action to stiffen it.

Gary Eliseo makes the best chassis on the market! His machining is near one to one fit. Bolt it in and shoot it.

He also makes superb single-shot versions in Barnard Model P, Remy 700 SA / Pierce, and Savage PTA action versions for prone/sling shooting, F-Class, long-range bench rest etc. No need at all for glue in his design - they work!

I have a B1 (Barnard) on an F/TR rifle and an S1 (Savage version) on the way and love the design. They're rare in the UK, just the odd example around including at least one R5 repeater, as we've had a few US-export problems. I've always liked inline stock designs with raked AR type pistol grips and you can't get a better example than the CSS. As people have said too, Gary Eliseo is the most helpful fellow to deal with, a true gentleman!

WVU - I have three of them, all glued in (Eliseo). There are about 10 or 12 more in my club, almost all are glued in. There's no downside to glueing it in and there is a likely enhancement due to the massive increase in rigidity. One of the guys in the club bolted his in initially, then glued it and said it shot better glued. He is a super high level shooter and I trust his evaluation completely.

Having said all that, there are tons of them out there shooting great scores with no glue, including Gary himself.

Thanks for the posts. I am eagerly awaiting my Barnard stock next month. Can you provide some information on the grip you are using? I am not sure what grip options will fit Gary's stocks.

Dennis, I think it's been some time since Milan was on the forum (this thread began in 2009). Any grip that fits an AR15 will fit the Eliseo stock. A lot of shooters use the ones made by Doan Trevor www.doantrevor.com Gary sells these unfinished and Doan sells them finished.

I have shaped my own grips in the past for pistol. I am really just used to my thumbhole grip on the Anshutz 1913 stock and would like to replicate that feel if possible. Didn't know they were AR15 grips on the Eliseo stock - that helps a lot.

An A2 pistol grip, a belt sander, a bunch of Bondo, and a can of textured spray paint will go a long way toward a well-fitting pistol grip for a tube gun.

I have the Tubb grip on mine. It can be shaped I suppose but I like it right out of the box.
