Falling Block Action

I was at the range yesterday and seen a guy shooting a falling block action in a benchrest competition.
I have never seen that before. I found it interesting.
Has anyone had any experience with these actions as a benchrest gun?

Tim:

In the 1970s there was a surge of falling block benchrest shooters. There were severl new actions developed but they have seamed to go by the wayside.

There was a modern falling block action called the "Wickliff", this may be spelled incorrectly but phonically correct. If any one knows about thee actions I would like to find out more about them. They were a modern machined falling block action and built very heavy.

I did a search and found that Wickliffe was sold in 1980ish
and a Edward Medves bought everything that was left.
It had an address, if interested I can send it to you.

We are even....

The "assa" is not the assra,American Single Shot Rifle Association).

You don't want to know what poped up, eh.

Have a great day.

At the IBS 100-200 Score Nationals, in 1993 at Mainville, PA., there was a competitor shooting a fiberglass stocked Ruger #1 in 6 PPC. In those days one of the range officers commands was, "Cease fire and remove your bolts". Kinda hard to do with a #1.

Yes, Alan told me a few days ago, no more.......hate to hear it really.

I had a Ruger #1, Kepplinger trigger, 6BR by Pac-Nor, 8t 26" 1V contour, shot very well. Shot a group, 3 shots in .498 at 330 yds one a.m. with 16x scope.

Not bad. My current K1A Ruger, 6.5x55 stock out the box, shot just under a 1 1/8" 3shot group, no calipers....but it's 'deer of angle'.....oh, at 200 yds also.

I am in the process of building a Wickliffe falling block action.

I also have access to another one if you a re looking for one.

Butch,

I am in the process of finding a barrel and furniture for her but haven't found one I like yet.

I'm also after AAA Curio wood which is a chore too.

Fayettefatts,

Thanks for the link. I have done many searches and that has never come up before????

Here are some pictures of my action.

I have hunted ground squirrels and prairie dogs with a Ruger #1 .223.

I have hunted deer, elk, and antelope with a Ruger #1 7mmRM.

I have a Ruger #1 .270 for converting to 6mmBR.

I have a Uberti 1885 30-30 for converting to 25-35.

And my savage 99s feel like falling block rifles.

And my Davenport 12ga falling block feels like a falling block rifle.

Everybody has their falling block action of choice. For a classic action with external hammer, give me a Winchester high wall every day and twice on Saturday. 32-40 is my caliber of choice.

Of that crop of single shots from the late '80s, make mine a Peregrine, but if you want one now, bring lots of money. Since it's non-traditional, a custom wildcat cartridge works well.

Currently, my only choice would be a Ruger #1. Fortunately you can barrel and chamber it to any reasonable caliber.

I've owned all three and currently shoot a couple of high walls and a Peregrine bench gun. I sold my Ruger #1 several years but recently acquired its ugly stepsister to build a custom in 327 Fed Mag.

PS ... it IS ASSRA.com, and a whole bunch of guys with falling block and other single shots hang out at that forum! ;)

I really wanted to buy a Hauck action, in the late seventies, but as a young gunsmith with a shooting habit, I was economically challenged, so I never did.
There was one fellow who made a real effort with a Remington Rolling Block and wrote it up in Rifle magazine. WH
