FAL mag on Savage 110?

I'm positive that this is not a new idea, but I have several of the Savage short actions and would like to know about converting the .308 to accept the FAL mags. I pulled the box magazine off of it and found that the FAL is too wide to protrude far enough into the receiver for the bolt to catch a round. it appears that a significant amount of material would have to be removed, how much is too much?) to allow it to move that far up. Has anyone already done this or something similar?

Double stack mags often to not work too well with bolt guns. Maybe look at Accuracy International AICS mags, they are designed for a bolt gun.

Savage short action is 10, not 110.

You could also try to use Savage det mag, and mate the FAL mag to it. Cut and weld, I mean. That would take care of feed lips and locking problems. Don't have short Savage mag handy, so cannot comment on dimensions.

The AICS mags latch at the back of the mag - there are various floorplate/mag well manufacturers - mainly for Rem 700 but maybe also for Savage.

.

Savage short action is 10, not 110.

Just a note...

Current and recent production Savage short actions have two-digit model numbers, e.g., 10, 11, 12, 16...

But for many years the short action, the long action, and intermediate length action had the same three-digit model number, i.e., 110.

The original model name came from the original intended retail MSRP sale price of $110 at the time Savage introduced this bolt action.

As Hammer noted, it is an older Savage and as such has a factory double stack blind mag. Does that mean that it will work with a double stack detachable mag, or is it an apple to orange comparison? I am trying to avoid a "custom" mag so that replacements would be readily available.

The only double stack mag conversion that works that I know of is a mini 14 mag for a rem 700. I use the AICS for my remington. I think CDi gunworks makes bottom metal for the savage that converts the rifle to AICS mags. There is no such thing as a cheap mag conversion for a bolt gun that I have found. The AICS mags work very well but are expensive. Good luck.

I called CDI because Savage was not listed on his web sight, seemed like a good guy but said that he ran a post on Savage Shooters and found that there was insufficient support so he does not do it.

Oh, I ASS-U-MEd that older 110 Savages in, say 308Win caliber, were done on the standard, long) length action...

He took the high road in explaining the situation to you.

He was talking about it over on Snipers Hide, I was interested and was hoping to drum up some additional interest - so I posted a link to the article on SavageShooters.

The good administrators of SavageShooters apparently saw it as an assault on a new product from the "gunsmith of choice" and after some pointed comparisons were made between AI magazines and modified factory Savage DM boxes, they deleted the thread - and then proceded to take a big dump in CDI's thread on the proposed Savage product over on Snipers Hide.

It was one of those "character defining" events.

Jeff at CDI took the high road then and apparently during your recent conversation.

Here is a product that is currently available $340 with one magazine included:

Jeff is a great guy. The last time that I talked to him I thought that he mentioned it. Sorry that I was incorrect and I hope that I did not cause CDi any problems. The only other choice for AICS mags is the Scott McCree stock.

fireball168.. Thank you for the great information, I'm looking at it now. Have you done this yet? Did you have to "modify" the receiver at all?

SooStan.. No apologies necessary, I don't even know how many leads that I have followed up on in the pursuit of this idea...

I just got a copy of the inletting print from John at JW.

He said that McMillan has it as an inletting option now.

Haven't tried one yet though.

I just got an e-mail back from Jeff at CDI and he seems to be a bang up guy! kinda wish I had gone with the Howa action so I could use his conversion but he pointed me to V-bull precision, I took a look at thier site and they had it noted that pics were to be up soon other than that I could not tell ya much else except I would really like the 10 round. The add on things look a little odd so I hope someone comes out with a good one soon. Later,

Kirk

I don't have any AI mags for comparison.. how different are they? Would someone please measure one so that I could compare it to the mags that I have. Thank you in advance.

Snipershide has a post with pictures of the different AI magazines and explanations of the differences. It might help.

It is pinned in the rifles secction. forth post Try this link.
