Factory Lapua Ammunition

Does anyone know how "Hot" Lapua loads their factory ammo?

The reason I am asking is that Bob White at The Shooter's Corner has a "Barrel Break In Oil", which I understand was some secret formula and then the guy who made it died, but someone has duplicated it (modern technology). The advantage is that you can (supposedly) break in a new competition barrel in 4 rounds. Bob said though that he thought that the Lapua ammo is "Hot" and could be a safety problem shooting the first round in what would be a "Wet" Barrel. I bought factory ammo as well as brass so that once I get some fired cases, I can send them with the reamer print to Whidden and get a set of custom dies, so I am not in a position to load some mild rounds for this purpose.

Thoughts ?

Thanks for reading. Bob

If you have a custom rifle with a barrel from a known manufacturer, assembled by a competent gunsmith, why would you put anything in the barrel to speed up the break in process? Why risk damaging your rifle? If the mystery oil worked, we all would be using it. Just start with a clean barrel and shoot it!

I hear you, but since Bob White is a pretty well respected shooter and gunsmith, I assumed that he knows from which he speaks.

It's a Borden action with a Kreiger Barrel.

Had an interesting exchange with Jim. Will be using his 5 shot method as outlined on his web site. Just order the rest of the supplies from Sinclair.

The Mystery Break In Oil is no mystery. Shooter Choice MC#7 Mixed With Kroil. 2 Parts MC#7 to one part Kroil.

For a custom barrel that has been hand lapped, this whole break in process seems way over rated to me. For my last two custom barrels I cleaned thoroughly before firing the first shot, then cleaned after the first three shots, then just went about my business. Both barrels shoot very well and clean up easily. Then again I'm certainly not an expert and could have just been lucky.

I have learned to never use WD-40 for anything but rust. This is basically a clean and shoot 5 rounds, clean and start shooting.

I both agree and disagree. I have over a dozen Kriegers and two Brux......all "broke in" within 5 shots....with most 2 or three shots. Then is was a simple patch job to get the copper out untill they became somewhat worn and fire cracked.

I have also used Braughten, Lilja, Hart, Spencer, and Schillen. All took way, way longer (more shots), and NONE of them ever came close to cleaning up like the Kreiger/Brux tubes when new!!!

Side note....I also try and break in factory tubes. I guess it helps to a degree, but they are all chiminys when it comes to carbon/copper. EXCEPT.......one high dollar Remington in 204 acted just like my Krieger/Brux tubes. Three shot break in and shot factory rounds into itty bitty groups. The owner has lots of money and won't own any junk....I should have lied to him and told him that he better get rid of it!!! ;) ;D But, he was a friend of mine. :'(

I am too new to this to have any real experience, though I owned a gun shop for 16 years and had my FFL for 35. Bought a rifle, wiped it down, ran a patch through the bore and shot it. Hand loaded with off the shelf dies and was happy with under 1 inch groups at 100 yards, and all but the rim rife rifles I owned would do that. Cleaning was Hoppes No. 9 with bronze brush and then some patches and a final coat of light Rem Oil. No Bore Guides, no neck turning, no custom dies, etc. etc. All with factory triggers and quality, but not Benchrest grade scopes. So now trying to learn this game I have read a considerable amount and talked to many In The Know and get just as many different opinions.

Thanks for all the input guys.
