F-TR Stock choice

What stocks are you folks using for your F-TR rifles.?

For Many years I just did not want to build a dedicated rifle for F Class.

i talked with a guy the other day at a match and he like myself is getting long in the tooth. He said he was thinking about building a dedicated rifle but did not know how many shooting years he had left. So he decided not to build one. My thinking was he should do it and enjoy his final shooting years to their fullest. Then it hit me, my stooopid butt should be doing it. So I have a Night Force Comp scope on the way, ordered a Joy Pod(On the waiting list). That leaves me with the choice of a stock left.

Going through this with my dad. He tried nickel and diming an F/class gun together. Got his to buy a BE rest and ditch the $99 Caldwell. Got him to buy Sightron SIII, good barrels and custom chamber, and just finished fitting his mid range gun into a new stock, a revolution. He can afford it no problem. But it took several years of shooting for him to realize why all the guns look the same. Its because they work.

Walk the line before prep. Look at the stocks people are using. Find out what's available. If possible ask if you can shoulder a couple different ones to see what you like and works with your set up.

Steve,
I feel your pain brother…. I settled on the McMillan Kestros. For me, it was the best. I can shoot both FTR and FO with it. It’s a lower profile than the XIT, which is just a McMillan prone with a flat keel. The MBR was great, but did not have an adjustable cheek piece. My Cloward prone stocks just did not track properly.

Thanks for the input John. I was just on McMillans site looking. lol. But I like wood too since I started shooting Sharps Rifles. lol. See you in Missoula in September..

I've had numerous stocks on my Ftr rifle and finally settled on a Richard's Microfit walnut. Being very particular about the grip I had extra wood left there to enable a couple of fit and test sessions, as with other regions of the stock. Finally a beautiful Arrow Wood Finish. I like the work and have the time being retired. So last winter I did the same for my 22lr.

I'm using the XIT. Basically, I looked at what some of the best were using and did what they were doing. I do like that it has a very long grip and it is angled just right for prone with a neutral thumb position.

Next year I'm going to build an open gun or re-barrel my wife's varmint rifle so she can come shoot, too.

What profile barrel are you using? xit seemed a little heavy to me. Excellent shape/style though.

Heavy Palma, 30", Golden Eagle, Jewel trigger, Kelbly Atlas, and Phoenix. Come in about 6 oz under weight. I might also note, I had the stock's barrel channel opened up to 1.250" to shave a little weight and allow some room to cool.

My thoughts..
Jason Avila= laminate stock, fast turn around, inlet, bed, and finishing options available, good price point.

Jason Pulvermacher= Xring stocks, laminate and natural wood, good lead times basic inlet in a lot of applications.

Dennis Ray= South West Action Works
Natural wood stocks, from basic boards to mind blowing over the top. Full service gunsmith.

Will McKlusky= Cerus
Beautiful boards, beautiful FTR stock.
Probably my favorite design.

Steve..Jason and have used the Manners T6 for a good while..that being said he still does and I built a dedicated 223 with a Borden BRM using a PR&T stock “love it” and this year built a dedicated 308 on a Bat 3l using a awesome stick from Cerus..I’m thinking about letting my T6 go it has A Ti Tuebor repeater with 308 & 223 bolt face bolts with a 308, 223, and 6bra barrels.

If I were going to get one right now, I'd get from SW action works. I only saw a couple pictures of facebag of his work, but it's what I'd consider perfect.

The absolute gem for FTR was the Kelbly KTS followed closely by the 1M. It was the right weight and when coupled with the Panda F could run a 30" parallel barrel. I'm annoyed that these are no longer made.

I had a PR&T when I started FTR, but found this very very fussy to shoot, so relegated back to my open gun. I hope Kelbly make stocks again in the future. I'd like another couple.20190702_171604.jpg

We have these Pierce FTR stocks. Back when John shot a lot of FTR he designed this stock, its essentially a short range BR stock with 1” added to the keel height for shooting prone. They track really well and they’re light so you can make weight with heavier barrels that are 30-32”.IMG_8657.jpegIMG_8652.jpeg

Holy chit that's light! I like it.

Buddy of mine... FTR qualified record holding kind of guy. He got a SR BR stock for weight reasons so he can use a BAT Neuvo. He struggled with it for a while. One day at practice I said "hey man, it's a BR stock, handle it like a BR stock" and it came alive and held groups.

@Jud96 - What's a stock like that cost? PM me if you want.
