F-TR 308 build question...

rmr

Gold $$ Contributor
I've had some parts and pieces laying around for years, and its about time to put them together. Its been 5...6 years since I've had a rifle built so I'm looking for a good builder and opinions on how the legos should assemble.

Ideally, I want something that will bridge F T/R, and club LR Tac matches. (unknown distance, 500-1000y)

all the parts are NOS:
Bat 3LL 308BF. I also have a spare bolt for .223.
Mac A-5 stock, with all the bells and whistles.

Boots 5R 11 twist .298/3075? 28" blank (what bullet?)
Bartlien 13 twist medium palma .298/3075? 32" blank (what bullet?)
Bartlien 7 twist .224

thoughts?

Will this be a single shot or repeater? A5s work well for FTR but you really need a custom rear bag with a very wide ear spacing. Berger 185s or 200s would be my choice on bullets.

Also I would use (or locate a smith who has) the 2013 F-TR reamer, which has a 0.170" freebore for those two bullets suggested by Rick.

But a 32" barrel F-TR gun will not be optimal for tactical style matches, and vice versa with a shorter barrel for tactical matches.

Don't forget about weight, a BAT 3 lug action and a McMillan A5 aren't light.

Use the 155 Bergers or 155 Sierra Palma bullets in the 308 with Lapua Palma brass. The lighter bullets will have less recoil so you can see your impacts or missies and adjust for follow up shots. Should be able to get them to 2900 if you cut the Boots barrel to 26" and add a brake. With those bullets you do not want to use a reamer with a .170 freebore something in the .50-.90 range would be more optimal for the lighter bullets. Make it a switch barrel with the .223 so you can practice with it. Shoot the 75-80 Amax's or 80 berger fullbores in the 223.
