F-open 284 barrel contour

I thought this might be better here than in the reloading forum,

a couple of us taught a advanced reloading and competition shooting course yesterday and were approached by a guy wanting to know which one of these barrel contours was better for a straight .284 in f-open.

(he is using a stock and action which allows a full taper as far as weight goes)

1. straight .284 in a .250 diameter barrel about 31 long

2. back end 1.250 and straight cylinder for 5 inches then taper to about 1.10 at 31 long

being a owner of straight taper rail gun barrels does not necessarily lead me to believe the weight of a straigh taper would not have any barrel droop at 31 inches, and so I would lean towards the very slight taper to 1.10 or so but I am looking for guidance form those who know what is more popular,

ues the straight taper is used by quite a few but I was wondering if the SLIGHTtaper might also work, (I think it looks better and was wondering if the slight taper handle the vibration better in a lower amplitude or some such terminology)

any thoughts

Neither contour is "better" it's just personal preference..

I'd suggest he try one of each and see which he prefers from a handling perspective. He might find he prefers one or the other, or it just doesn't matter.

The F-Open weight limit is 22 pounds and there is no good reason to build a .284 rifle that is much less. As long as you have a long forend, a 32" straight cylinder is a good choice. If your stock forend is not long, the tapered contour is probably a better choice for tracking. Either contour is likely to provide good accuracy.

I had two (2) Krieger #17 HV (1.25 for 6" down to .980) in 6.5 X 284's and now have a straight 1.25" / 31" tube on my .284 Shehane>>> I see no difference in the performance between the contour variations.. I think it would come down to aesthetics... Which gives YOU the most "eye candy" for your tastes..
