F class with L/A 700 6SLR?

I have a couple .473 face long actions sitting around and am planning an f class rifle build in 6slr. Would I be at a disadvantage using a long action over a short?

I'm planning on using a McMillan f class stock.

A long action would be an advantage. They aren't that much different in length, but loading or ejecting loaded rounds would be a lot easier with a long action. My first 2 F class rifles were 700 SA. The short action wouldn't even eject an empty 284 case. It would pop up and hit the scope rail, then fall back down in the action. I would have to hook the empty case out after each shot, because there isn't port clearance for the case and my finger. I would have to use my ECI to get the cases out. That slows down your shooting, gets your body out of position, and just plain pisses you off after each shot. How would that ever be an advantage?

The long action would allow you the port clearance to seat bullets farther out of the case, and still be able to eject loaded rounds. I have to ask though, why 6slr? The short cases are more efficient for 6mm bullets. Even the 243 case can tend to be a barrel burner. What distance do you plan to use this at? My first F class rifle is a 260, that I hoped would be good for overall competition. With 140 class bullets, it's good to 800yds. If it's calm, 1000 is fine. If it's windy like normal, it can't compete at 1000yds! My 260 is now strictly a 600yd rifle that is getting changed out to a 6.5x47L this year.

Ringo, I'm scratching my head on the 260 not making a 1000 yds, but the 6.5x47 will? Will the 6.5x47 push the 140 Gr bullets a lot faster than the 260?

What's wrong with the SLR? It is essentially a 243 with a longer neck and steeper shoulder granting you a bit more barrel life. I've had a couple SLR's and they have been great shooters, just not geared towards competitive shooting.

I'm not overly concerned about barrel life as I'm doing all the work myself.

Thanks for the input guys. What are your favorite stocks? Is the McMillan a good choice?

Tim, I never said that I was going to use the 6.5 for 1000yds. Slayer, I didn't say the 6slr was a bad choice. I'm just asking out of curiosity why you picked that round? I Like trying different rounds. That's why I also load and play with 6.8spc and 357sig.

I chose the SLR because I like the ease of forming cases, 3200FPS with a 105 hybrid yields amazing results out to 1000 yards and I have 500 pieces of new winchester 243 brass that works great for forming the SLR case.

I like experimenting with different rounds as well. I load for 280ai, 9x25 dillon, and am building a 7mm-300 win mag right now.
