F Class Target Strategy (upwind or down) which tactic to use and why

Good Afternoon

I have been thinking of ways on how to maximize points and have had several discussions on shooting up or down wind (safe siding) like the one pictured. Can you share your thoughts on which you prefer and why. Is there merits to shooting upwind vs. down wind and when would you employee this tactic.

Thank you

Part of the fun of getting good at this game is learning on your own.

That said, I would intentionally safe side upwind. I do that because I shoot a given pattern of wind.

Other shooting techniques require safe-siding on the downwind side.

How do you shoot? Where do you lose points? - Those are the questions you have to ask before deciding which side.

Pardon a noob but what is safe siding? I tried googling it but all I got was this thread and articles on siding for houses (though it could be my google-fu skills are lacking). From the sound of it and the picture included I would guess it involves favoring one side of the 10-ring as opposed to going for X but it would be great to get further explanation. Thanks.

Safe-siding is, as I understand it, the strategy of purposely putting your shots on one side of the target as insurance against a change in conditions.

As an example, in the picture shown, the shooter might have been concerned about about gusts coming out of the left, or perhaps a twitchy flag down range that could flip to the other side of the pole on short notice. Putting the shots on one side might give up some Xs but avoid some 9s out the other side if the conditions do shift. Everyone oohs and aahs over high X-counts, but 10s win matches. ;)

...
^^^^This^^^ You are trying to get a little more target real estate to protect against a sudden change. this assumes you have a good idea of the direction of the sudden change....so this only works well in a regularly repeating pattern of wind. which side is "safe" depends on the condition you are guarding against. You'll have to figure that out case by case, but sudden let-offs or switches are the usual suspects.

Get Nancy Tompkin's book if you are serious about learning.
