F class stocks

I am thinking of buying an F class stock to replace the stock on my rebarrelled savage model 12 chambered for .284 win. What stocks are you all using and why? Thanks for the advice.

Ted

I too am thinking about a F class stock and am looking at the PR&T lowboy. Did they fit it to your action, or did it need additional smith work?

I'm using the Savage F class stock on my Savage target action. Bought it from Northland Shooters Supply. I wish it had a lower profiler but overall a decent stock and the price is competitive.

I'll second the Shurley Bros. stocks, he will oversize inlet for your action for bedding and for pillars too. His stocks are top notch.

Look at Kelbys F-Class stocks, made from fiberglass and carbon fiber, very light. Just ordered a complete F/TR rifle from them. Unbelievable guys do deal with, top notch customer service!

How about a McM. MBR. They work fine for F and 1000BR. I have a friend that uses one as a switch barrel and runs a brake on a HV for 1000BR then spins on a strait 1.25 for the 22lb.F-Open....And this guy has won just about all of it..........The Viper......Bob Pastor

I have a pr&t lowboy that tracks decent but it is heavy. Very rigid as well.

I wouldn't call it heavy. With a PR&T buttplate, Panda action, Nightforce BR scope, and a 32" 1.25" barrel, my gun is right at or just under 21lbs.

The PR&T is a good stock with a known track record (ha ha) and reasonably priced.

I currently have two that I clear coated myself. If you finish it yourself you can have a complete, bedded stock with an adjustable buttplate for around $1,000 (including cost of finish), depending on how much your smith charges to pillar bed your action into the stock. I had a previous PR&T with an adjustable cheekpiece and did not find it useful so I got them without this time around, which makes ~$350 difference.

Also consider the long range bench rest variant, which has the same foreend but the stock is different with a lower comb that makes more sense for the free-recoil/light hold shooting style.

I just got one of the low boy BR versions of the PR&T and it's very rigid and completely true. They are known for there ability to ride the bags straight so they will track well.

I have a PRT Lowboy with a Savage action in .284. 3 way adjustable butt plate and it utilizes a bedding block. It is an amazing set up that shoots lights out.

The other stock that is on my wish list is a composite "low profile" stock, but either the McMillan or the Manners F class open stocks are a bit flexible in the forend of the stock for my liking. Not heard of much working better than the PRT to date. It seems like most of top national competitors are using them when you look at the equipment lists.

What about the master class f class stocks? I haven't heard anything about them?
Alex Sitman at Masterclass is an artist when it comes to stocks and bedding actions. His craftsmanship is second to none in my opinion. If you want the best Alex is your man.

There is no shortage of available stocks at various prices to meet the needs of the F-class shooter. Some considerations besides price and wait time would be: How low to the ground will your shooting style and body allow you to shoot? Generally lower is better. How much weight does your barreled action and scope allow you to have in your stock? The heavier your total rifle weight is, and to still make weight the better. Will you need an adjustable cheek piece? A comfortable cheek weld, that centers your eye on the optical axis of the scope is critical. Accurate Shooter gives you access to information and the web sites of most of the major players who offer F-class stocks. Good luck.
