F-Class Spotting scope question.

I am building a rifle to shoot F-class this year, so that has consumed most of my money and I still need a spotting scope. My question is, I have found a pretty good deal on a Nikon Prostaff 5 82mm spotting scope. Is this good enough to score, see pasters, exc...? I know there are alot better out there but, I cant afford them right now and this one is almost half price of a new one and it is still in the box never used. Thanks for any info you can give ahead of time.

As long as it has an angled eye piece you should be able to do scoring, etc. from position with it comfortably. Better glass and longer eye relief are always helpful, but not strictly necessary.

20-60 will do just fine. An angled neck is preferable. If you've got a good deal, I don't think you can go wrong. :)

It will get the job done nicely.
Although I would like to upgrade, I still score and shoot with the Konus 20-60x80 that I started with.

I saved up and went with the Kowa. That way I only had to buy it once. Either way, I think the Nikon will do the job.

I use my scope on the line when I'm shooting as well. I feel that I can see the mirage and conditions better than using the scope on the rifle.

You should have no problem seeing scoring and shot pasters at 20x.

I have a Nikon 20-75 Fieldscope ED 82mm. Your scope is more than adequate to score. Like KT, I use mine at the line for better mirage imaging.

Shooting both sling and F-Class I was surprised the number of F-Classer's that don't use a spotting scope at all, just their riflescope. I tried this for a while and admit it is nice not to bring more stuff to the line, but I have gone back to using the spotting scope to assist with reading the wind. I have used both Nikon and Konus, they work just fine, I usually focus the spotting scope around the 300 yard line to watch the mirage a little easier. The riflescope is set for the target and there is no issue confirming the spotter location IMO.

I am just getting started and I have never used my spotting scope on the line. Last match I fought the urge to turn the scope power down to"clear up" the mirage.

I left it turned up and actually watched the mirage in my scope.. I in turn shot my highest score yet.

I do need to get a stand I can use on the line while shooting. I do want to try it.

What with scope prices today, a new spotting scope, a good one is a hit that's for sure. However this is one place were just good enough is not going to make you happy. Spend once and get a superior scope even if that means waiting awhile.

I use a Kowa TSN 821, now I am not vain enough to believe that it is the best scope out there. However it is close. I bought this scope 10 years ago and paid around a Grand for it then. Today this model is no longer made. It is a superior scope in my opinion. I see them on the used market from time to time for less than half of that $1,000 dollars I paid. This would be a good way for a new shooter looking for a very good scope to go. Buy the best you can afford and you only have to buy once...

meopta wide angle with eye phone 4s adapter, focus short on yardage and video mirage for wind reading. eye phone visual and video better than my eye.

I picked up a Leica 77 with a 25-60 eyepiece used a couple of yrs ago. It wasn't cheap, but it's clear.
