300 yards is a good yardage to shoot a ladder test. More usefull info can be deciphered than at closer ranges. Usually ladder tests done at closer ranges the are so close to each other that it may be hard to read the results.

Any good suggestions on how to keep track of each shot. Even at 300 yards I find my hits to be pretty close and sometimes it's hard to diagram them for later evaluation. Don't feel like walking out and numbering each hit so any suggestions would be welcome.

get different color sharpie's and color the bullets. target needs to be white for the color to show.

Any recommendation as to which would work best? The permanent type or the dry erase type?

permanent. red , blue and green work best. don't color the bearing surface. it may work if you use you taregt over a white poster board also. at or club they have that white coragated plastic and when i removed my target the color was on it also.

there is an article on accurateshooter I think for 1000 yd ladder test that uses the colored tips to keep track of the bullets at long range.

Rifle is a 308 Win with a 26" twist and B&C stock and about to put a Sightron SIII 8-32x on it

178gr Match bullet workup

Switched to Varget and CCI 200 primers with the 178BTHP bullets and did a OCW work up at 100 yards on Thursday/Friday.

Starting load was 43.5gr and worked up to 44.7 gr

Picked 44.2 gr as charge and did seating depth test

The color sharpie works, another method that I use is to set a video camera close (read not in line with the firing but about 20-30 feet off to the side) and video tape the string. This works well if there are not other shooters around and when you play it back later you will have no problem firing which shot went where.

Looks like you got a good load going there.

I am assuming that 44.2 is #4 shots in the first photo. ?

Depth test 1, 2, and 3 look very promising, the horizontal might be the wind or shooter position. How much are you altering the depth at a time? How where you reading wind when shooting the test? I like to load a 10 round series and some sighters of the best seat depths and shoot a reduced f-class target at 100 yards, further if possible, and shoot for score, and call all shots. If the shots are on call and not flying all over, I'll choose the most consistent depth from the series for match load.

If you are not getting pressure issues, all shots can hold the ten/X ring(or at least on call), shoot a match, I bet it'll work out fine. ;)

Well, I finally did it. Went to Staples and bought a 24 piece "Sharpie" set and used the colors that contrasted the most with each other for a 10 round ladder test.

Now I just have to figure out which loads are best. Even at 300 yards there was little separation. Apparently my rifle has a couple of real broad "sweet spots".

I used a piece of white foam board as a backer for my target paper. The "color wipes" were difficult to read on the target paper but they were like neon lights on the foam poster board.

Heavies--- 44.2 was between load #3 and #4 in first target. I was not really paying close attention to wind since it was under 5mph and almost into my face. I think when I get a sinclair f class bipod and a good rear bag my groups and shooting will improve alot. Currently using a LeadSled Plus and I believe when I fire it slides back and the gun moves slightly in the rest. BUt like you said should be getting close to a decent load to work with

Seating depth test verification

shot second seating depth test at 100 yards so think I found my load to work with now.

Varget-44.2 gr
CCI 200 primer
