F Class Flag

I had a simple question about flag pole construction for shooting long range (like in F Class). Are there guidelines about the best way to attach an NRA wind flag to the pole? For example, do you need a pulley on top that swivels 360, what sort of lanyard weight do you use etc. Or do you guys keep I simple. thanks.

KISS I am not aware of any written/unwritten standard. Just have a method of 'cleating off' the halyard to keep it as taut as possible once the flag is hoisted. If it is too loose the base of the flag will lift away from the pole and cause the end to 'tip up' in a much lighter wind than the flag would normally indicate.

My dumbass range has had empty flagpoles for ten years. This after hundreds of thousands of dollars on upgrades. A couple of days ago I noticed a crew of the board and committee guys roaming to determine what to address, esp since we have an fclass match soon. Upon discussing this, I was informed flags aren't necessary because the 25yd plinker matches shot between walls don't have a problem with wind!

I just bought flag poles for the range I normally shoot at. 25 feet tall. No rope. The pole extends.

The only thing I'd say to consider is a regulation F Class flag is 48" high and 12' long. That's a LOT of surface area that creates a lot of drag on a pole and I've seen them bend some poles with serious wind. We run heavy pipe poles at my club but I've seen a lot of different setups.

Don’t need a pulley or a swivel, just an eye at the top, and a cleat somewhere below eye level. Thick wall tubing. If you’re using NRA flags, I’d use at least a 16’ pole. 550 cord works great, lasts a long time in the sun.
If you might want to move them, your local tire shop will probably give you junk tires for free. With a 16’ pole, regular size car or light truck tires work fine, you don’t need something huge. Get a foot or so of steel tubing that your flag pole will slip into, and concrete that piece into the tire. That way you can lift the flag pole out of it, if you need to.
