F class 1000 yard caliber?

Ok, I have my mid range F class open guns finished. I want to build one more that is better at 1000 than the mid range ones i have(they are 6brs). I have a stock due any day and it should weigh 8-9 pounds.
I want:
> good barrel life
> not to hard on the shoulder
> fairly easy to tune

soooo? any help will be appreciated. thanks > not having to fireform

I agree with .284 Win, given your criteria. High B.C. bullets, good velocity with a wide powder range, fine accuracy that is easily achieved and excellent brass. Lapua 6.5-284 brass must have the neck expanded to un-wildcat it , but that is a minor problem.

BTW, I also use a 6BR for Mid Range. I have shot it to 198-9X at 1000 but that was in very calm conditions.

I like the Shehane version of the .284 Winchester. Easy fire-forming (no significant reduction of neck length), and you pick up about 2.5 grains of case capacity. For some loads that may help you get to a more accurate node without over-pressuring the case. Just think of it as a .284 Win Ackley.

The next jump up in capacity is pretty big -- to the 7mm RSAUM or 7mm WSM.

I had a 6.5x284 last year and liked it except for barrel life, Will the 284 be similar in recoil and accuracy?
The 6.5x284 weighed around 15 pounds and whatever i build this time will be around 19-20 pounds.

A .284 shooting 180's will have a little more recoil and be just as accurate. Why limit the weight when F-O rules allow 22 pounds? Use all you can. My .284 Shehane weighs 21 pounds, 5 ounces and I am considering 1/2 pound of lead in the butt.

As Sleepygator, I use a 284 Shehane with a Berger 180 grain VLD going out at just over 2900 fps.
A mate of mine uses a straight 284 and it also does the business. Plus you get good barrel life.
I used to use a 6.5 x 55 Ack Imp but when windy I was getting whupped by the 284/7mms.

Hi, If Your going to build a new stick-- GO with the shehane.
Very easy to size up,Use (laupa 6.5mmx284) Just load and shoot fire-forming is automatic.
At 1000yds. My x doesn't move around so damm much . This thing is nice!!.

my first post on here, i currently shoot F-TR over here in the UK.

I'm just getting my first full custom rifle built for F-Open and I settled
on .284 win for reasons given. good ballistics, barrel life etc.

If you are committed to not fireforming, then .284;

Otherwise, the shehane - some can do both at the same time.

If you are going to fireform think about getting a burnt out 7mm barrel and form in a forming barrel then install your match barrel with pristine throat, and have formed brass ready to roll.

My brother formed roughly 200 cases in about 15 minutes with his forming barrel. He used some VERY inexpensive 140 grain hunting bullets (instead of cream of wheat), and burnt a bunch of powder that he no longer used for anything (using uickload to make sure it gave him the necesary pressure to form while still being a safe pressure). It was pretty interesting to see the reaction of other shooters in the vicinity when he commenced his rapid-fire onslaught.

Some folks have done well at 1000 with the .243. The 7mm's have a ballistic advantage but it could still be somewhat competitive as could the 6mm Remington. Barrel life with heavy bullets and full charges is likely a problem.
