Eyesight Question/Help

Anyone shooting iron sight competitions had cataract surgery? I am facing that situation and am interested in which lens you used and what works best, single distance focus or multifocus?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

This has come up recently either here or on benchrest.com. I posed the question myself and got lots of useful info. I would try a search on the topic. Myself, I have astigmatism too. I am going to get distance corrected lenses as that seemed to be the consensus. One guy said with his, he could focus clearly down to about 3 feet. I met a guy at a BR shoot that said he got distance lenses and uses trifocals with the lines and likes them. Clear glass on top. I am going to go with bifocals with clear tops and single-distance computer glasses. I will only wear the bifocals in specific situations, such as driving with sunglass clip-ons.

I called my neighbor this morning after reading this post and he made arrangements with the eye doctor to bring his rifle to the clinic. They went out back of the clinic and set him up.

Have a chat with a good eye doctor ;) Though I don't wear glasses. I had to have them made to give me optimum vision between 12 and 16 inches for the tig welding I do.

A 67 year old silhouette shooter friend of mine had his done last fall. He had resorted years ago to shooting the scoped classes be cause of his eye sight. Now he can see like a young man again. Sights are totally clear with no glasses!

Thanks for the responses! I have shot for the last 20 years with iron sites and had my rifle in many times to my eye doctor office to get the lens that worked the best. I even have the microsight system in use. The question was specificly about the cataract sugery and the lens used as the replacement in the eye and the option of using a distance only lens or the multifocus lens. For sure the distance only lens will require an additional corrective lens to see the front sight clearly.

tonedaddy, I would like to know if your friend received the distance only lens or multifocus lens implant!

Again, do a search here and other sites for previous threads on cataracts. I didn't hear anyone singing the praises of multi-focus lenses, and some tried them and went to distance focus. If you have distance focus and use the SR Microsight, you should have no issues seeing the front sight clearly. I used to think I wanted the "Crystalens" multifocus product, but have heard enough bad stories that I no longer want it.

I had mine done about 3years ago and had a focal lenght of about 10 ft. Distance? I use lineless bifocals and can deal w/ most iron sight situations. The biggest issue with the bifocal is head position to get to the "sweet spot" The lined bifocal may show some real advantages here. A couple of things to remember. Your eye will develope some agree of accommodation, which will be slow to adjust. SO DONT DO A BUNCH OF READING before you shoot! I think if you do a lot of iron sight use, getting lenses to suit your every day activity and following/tuning w/lined multifocal lenses. These are relatively inexpensive and can be dialed into most situations such as position or focal distance.

Thanks for the replies? I believe I will stay away from the multifocus lens implant!

I hear ya on this one, went to flip the helmet up and it hit the work table...that's when I knew something was wrong and had to see the eye doctor.

Having a strong astigmatism, my vision has always been a problem when shooting. One optician once told me, "You have the worst vision I can imagine to be doing what you do for fun." I'm only now beginning to have the first signs of cataracts. I have a pair of Knobloch shooting glasses that look like something out of an ophthalmologist's office but it's the only way I can see clearly when aiming. Sighting through my normal progressive glasses is like looking in a fun-house mirror. Lined trifocals would be much, much better.
