Eyes opened...

I've been playing with my .45 ACP Mech Tech upper on my 1911. I found some data from Vihtavuori using N-105 with 185 gr. JHP's. I figured with a 16" barrel it would be a nice fit over N-340 and Power Pistol I use in +P loads for the 5". I loaded up 50 185 gr. Zero's with N-105 in Federal cases with some old CCI 300 primers. Velocity averaged 1430 but extreme spread was over 100 fps! Today I loaded 50 in Starline cases with the same powder charge and used Winchester WLP primers and the average rose to 1530 fps with SD at 16 fps! Accuracy improved and I actually started shooting it at 100 yards! I knew they make a difference but I have never seen anything this drastic! Never too old to learn...

Never too old to learn - how true - last year I acquired a Weatherby Vanguard, 223 Rem. with a synthetic stock. After many years of experience with Remington's and their pressure points on the end of the forearm of the stock, the first thing I normally do is free float the barrel since none of them would shoot very well for me with these pressure points. In addition most mfg's are now free floating the barrels even on sporters.

The Vanguard is touching the barrel the entire length of the stock. Before I modified the stock to free float the barrel I called Weatherby believing that I might have gotten one the slipped through their quality control but to my surprise their tech rep told me that their Vanguard's are designed that way and shoot better with the barrel fully supported by the stock.

I didn't believe this for one second but just for fun I shot the rifle as is and after some minor load development I was shocked by the results. This rifle was shooting five shot groups in the 1/2 moa range with no flyers. Go figure?

PS: This is a nice rifle - extraction system is outstanding, I like the 24" barrel and 7.5 lbs weight, and the fit of the recoil lug in the stock is perfect. The stock is stiff, stable and handles well.

I had an issue with the powder charge not fully burning using CCI Lg Pistol primers my 45 ACP loads. Changing to Winchester LP solved the problem. I also found Federal LP 45 brass to be a little stiff compared to Winchester brass.
