284 shehane Norma brass, Kelbly Atlas Tactical action-about 4 outta last 30 failed to extract, punched out pretty easy with cleaning rod. Cleaned bolt good, including taking extractor out, cleaning, replacing.
any ideas as to direction to point my smith?
thanks

I bought a new Bat Neuvo last year, and it had the sam problem. About every forth round wound not extract.

The problem was the Sako style extractor was simply too close the the bolt face, and there’s was very little clearance for it to snap over the rims of some of the cases.

I fixed it myself by putting the extractor in my tool grinder and taking a few thousands off of the inside of the hook on the extractor and polishing the sharp edges.

You can probably do the same with some Emory paper and a small flat file. This will take some time as most extractors are case hardened, which is why I used the tool grinder.

I never did ascertain whether the extractor was a tad out of tolerance, or the slot was machined a tad too far back.

Same thing the other day with my BAT M not extracting my 257 SAUM cases using ADG brass...
Rem SAUM brass no problem, 338 UM brass no problem..My 3 L BAT would pull them all...
Removed the extractor and worked the hook over and problem solved....

Thanks Jackie, thats what Kelblys just told me to do.
338--not sure havent tried---what are you thinking? interestingly-it extracted these pieces of brass fine while fireforming.

Same thing with a Borden action and 6.5 x55 Lapua brass. I took a jeweler's file to adjust the extractor and all was well. It did not take much material removal from the Sako extractor. I had to remove metal from the surface that contacts the rim (underside of the 'hook').

Had a Kelbly Panda with the same issue. Called up the good folks at Kelbly's and was told how to fix it, or just send it to them with some brass and they would do it for me. @jackieschmidt detailed the fix to the problem.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

UPDATE-well, did some filing as per Jackie and kelblys, got 25 rounds extracted, 26,27,28--no such luck-gonna try the new extractor I bought,THEN if no luck File more on extractor#1--or take to my gunsmith or send to Kelblys.
Thanks guys
Mark
