Extra ear protection.

I stumbled upon the fix for headaches while using in-ear plugs with muffs. I trim the forest of hair out of the ear canal. The plugs seat easier. No pain.

Over the years I've tried all sorts of ear plugs, sometimes with an additional ear muff, sometimes not.
For the last few years I've settled on Home Depot foam ear plugs (orange), with "shotgunner" ear muffs over that.
Seems to work well for me. That's for shooting rifles. If shooting handguns I'll wear the bulkier standard ear muffs, still over the foam plugs.

Sometimes, when wearing glasses the earmuffs don't quite seal well around the ears, as well as when touching a rifle buttstock, hence the double protection. YMMV.

The moldable radians are great. Get a set of those and use electronic muffs over top. Cuts out all the noise, but still allows you to hear conversations/range commands

I made some ear plugs out of foam. custom fitted and comfy. Also use electronic muffs in conjunction. Even with small calibers like .22 or .380

Do you guys think you need ear plugs when you wear electronic muffs? Ive often wondered. The muffs seem to take it to nothing. Wore roll-up plugs for years at Lake City . You get to where you can carry on a conversation with machines running and plugs in. Maybe you get good at lip reading. Doug

It depends. I usually don't double up if I have distance between. But I was shooting right next so someone shooting a Ruger Precision and that rifle had the loudest brake I've ever hear.

I had to step away and double up because it was painful to be next to him.

The electronics do nothing to attenuate the sound of the shot. What they do is to shut off the amplification during the shot. Take a look at the DB ratings. I like amplified muffs with the 33DB foam plugs because I can hear range commands better because the amplification penetrates the plugs when no one is shooting, if the volume is turned up. On a covered firing line, and benches on concrete, shots are louder than out in the field, there is also the matter of muzzle brakes. For those reasons, unless I am alone on a range, I use double coverage, with Howard Leight plugs and amplified muffs.

I am not sure why, but for some reason my ears are starting to hurt when shooting at a match. I really never was affected by muzzle blast....mine or anyone else's.....but now!!! I see people using both insertable ear protection along with regular muffs. I tried that at the last match with those soft orange plugs, but had a hell of a time getting them into my ears. Like they were TOO soft and even when I lubed them up I really couldn't get them into the canal.

What are the other options besides the soft orange throw away types?

Thanks,
Tod
Not sure which "regular muffs" you are using but search for a headset that has gel ear cup pads instead of the foam filled plastic-like seals, for starters. Those plain generic earcup seals blow. The gel seals around the ear are way more effective. Now again, depending on the set you are using now, perhaps it is one that you can get gels seals as replacement. This way, you don't have to be so concerned about how the extra foam buds fit and seal.

Everyone’s ear canals are different sizes and the plugs vary from brand and model. What works for one person might not be the best choice for you. Some online retailers sell variety trial packs that you can get and experiment with different plugs to find what’s most comfortable and gives the best fit. Once you decide which brand and model you like, purchase those in a bulk.

Personally I’m a believer in doubling up with plugs and electronic muffs.
