Extent of Leupold's Custom Shop and what to do with antiquated equipment?

I am sure this has been asked before, and I know the custom shop is shut down, but here is my quandary. I have an older Mark 4 3.5-10 mil/MOA scope. I recently purchased the VX-5 in mil TMR and am finding it so much easier to not have to deal with a mil/MOA scope. Therefore, I want to upgrade the Mark 4.

  1. What would a Mark 4 in good condition be worth these days?
  2. Could the custom shop change the turrets/internals to mil vice MOA? And if so, would it be cost prohibitive.

I am thinking about just trying to sell the Mark 4 and a set of older Zeiss binos I have to fund the purchase of the Mark 5. Not sure what the older Zeiss binos, 10X42B are worth either.

Any help of criticism is greatly appreciated.

Several years ago I sent a pair of scopes to them for a reticle change. Wanted them changed from mil to moa too. They would not do that. The reticle change cost so much it would have been cheaper to find different scopes.

On the cost factor - I'm thinking that if they open the custom shop, pricing may be a bit more than it was before they closed down.
Even before closing down, they raised the cost of changing reticles from $70 to $120.

So it comes down to, how much $$$ you willing to spend?
We pick up $400/$500 rifles, replace the barrel and trigger, another $500/$600 dollars, then drop $$$$ on a Night Force scope?
Figure you're only going around one time (unless you're Shirley MacLaine) so you best enjoy what time you've got left. ;) ;)

Sell the Lupey, and buy Night force in Mil/Mil.
Almost same for me. Wanted Tmoa Reticl;e in fixed 16x Mk4. Sent it in and Custom shop decided they did not have the enginerring to do that so they just put in the TMR recticle. So I still had a MOA/MIL scope.
Only Lupety I'll buy is maybe a hunting scope.

what to do with "antiquated equipment"?

Go easy there. You're hitting pretty close to home.

Me and Lupey don't quite see eye to eye.
Got a an older 4 power that I got from my Father.
Didn't meet him till I was in my 50s but that's another story for later.
Mounted the Lupey on my Ruger 10-22 and headed for the hills.
Shot the crap out of a bunch of Ground Squirrels.
Heard a rattle in the tube.
Did some checking and found the "fine" cross hairs had come loose.
Lifetime warranty? Off to Leupold for repair. No problem except, got a different cross in return. :(
Shot the crap out of it again till I heard that same "rattle".
Cross fell out AGAIN.
Shipped it back AGAIN for repair. This time, got it back with the proper cross. Also, note saying scope wasn't designed for the semi auto 10-22?? Holds up to 300 W Mag recoil with no issue but can't handle the semi auto 10-22??
So much for my faith in Leupold.
March, Night Force, etc? Fine till you see your rig roll off the bench, smack a tree stump or a big rock. (scope first):eek: That's enough to piss off the Pope.
So, you pays your money and you takes your chances? Ain't life great. :D
Don't forget Shirley. Maybe she knows something we don't?? ;)

Leupold has/is changing their internal designs. This means they will run out of parts that fit the older scopes. When this happens, if it hasn't already, they will simply send you a new and cheaper model scope. For current model scopes, I think they are gonna go the Vortex route and replace rather than repair, at least for the lower tier models. Top end models may still get repaired.
The "Custom Shop" will simply be a place to order a new scope with bells and whistles that are not on regular production models. For awhile you may be able to get a reticule changed or knobs changed on the high end stuff or the custom models.
I'm currently using a half dozen of the old straight 12X scopes with the target knobs. Picked up one cheap just before the Covid. Wanted to send it in for target knobs install. Was told they don't/can't/won't work on them anymore. Inquired what will happen if/when it breaks. Was told they would send me a new scope that Corporate designated as a replacement. Not looking forward to that!

I had a range finder quite on me.. Sent int in they called me and said the model was no longer in production and offer me an up grade for $100. I whipped out my wallet faster than Pee Wee Herman whipped out his tally whacker in a movie theater..

I have received a similar answer to those above ,I am not a fan of leupold any more after this song and dance .My gut feeling is the custom shop is closed for good….. I guess I will look at niteforce had good luck with them .
