experimentally long freebore 6.5x47L

went with a 30 inch bbl in case it dont work and we need to shorten it some,,my last bbl had a .167FB and I never got the 140 class bullets to shoot and it was kinda slow,,this time we throated it out to .215 FB,,with the bullet seated out a little less than half way up the neck I was able to get 42.5 grs H4350 in and seat the bullet without being a compressed load and be able to jump the bullets as much as .025 but settled on .016,,

with the .215 FB and the 135 seated .016 off the lands and 42.5 grs H4350 CCI450 primers I am getting 2925 fps with single digit ES and none pressure signs and 5 shot groups at 100 yards in the .195-.205 range,,

thats it for 100 yards as I will be fine tuning at 600 yards and really hope to agg under 2 inches after I get the bugs worked out,,

hopefully Dead Zero Range will get started and I can shoot some 300-500 yard FClass and 600 yards IBS matches,,

until then I will be pecking away with my PPC at the 2 Brothers UBR Score Matches that I have learned to love,,

happy shooting everbody

It amazes me this isn't more common. I have the freebore on my 6x47 reamer at .208 and also get great velocity without excessive pressure.

Thanks for this info @mr.big and @steve123. Somebody is building my first 6.5x47L barreled action. It’s for PRS so I need max COAL around 2.85”. I would like to learn more about freebore. Also what COAL are your loads at the given jump values?

I have my throat in my 6.5x47 at .200”. I run 130’s and this gets me at the right spot for the bullet heal to be in line with the neck/shoulder juncture.
No need for fitting to mag length here, no rounds allowed in the magazine anyway in our comps. Bullet jump is right at .030”.
With 140’s, the bullet heal is in line with the neck/shoulder juncture, so it works for either. Bullet jump is at .020”.

I have always matched my throat lengths to the bullets I intend on using, why you would want the bullet seated past the pressure ring has always concerned me.

Anyway, I like your thinking.

Cheers.
:)

I have a Tac 30 in an AICS 1.5 in 6.5x47,,it will depend on which bullet your gonna use to determine what freebore you need to fit mag length,,

mine is a .167 FB and I shot the 130 VLD`s at 2.825 OAL and the bullet was seated just above the donut area,,it would work with the 140 Hybirds also but the 130s shot better for me,,

My 6.5x47l has a .250 freebore I shoot 139 scenars 10 thou off the lands for a coal of approx 2.840 inches. The bullets are seated with slightly less than a half bullet diameter of the bullet bearing surface in the neck. No pressure signs could go up to 42g h4350 fits in ok

I have thought about a reamer to do the 6.5x47 like everybody is doing the 6BRA ,,with the 40* Ackley shoulder and about a .235 FB might put it in the H4831 wheelhouse..
