Experiment that took me by surprise!

Being retired and some time on my hands, I decided to work through a little experiment! Covid hit and matches were being cancelled and here we go. I just wrapped everything up a few weeks ago. To my surprise, the rifle I expected to do the best did not, and the one I expected would probably trail the others shined! I'm not disappointed, just was not expecting these results. I've always talked about the heavies doing well in the wind, and if I'm not wrong, this may be another case in point. Regardless, it was fun and I never dreamed the agg's would be this good. I saw where someone a ways back posted that we always want to show our wallet groups. Well, in this exercise I had a few of those with every caliber, but I also had some I was not too proud of.

Wow! That was quite a undertaking.
Was there anything interesting in the test that comes to mind? Such as, was one a cream puff to shoot compared to the others.

The Dasher is my favorite to shoot. You can free recoil or hold tight....it dont matter! Love that rifle and caliber. They all shoot so well that I simply said: hey I'm going to do this once and for all just to see the outcome. I would still take any one of them to a match.

You asked about anything interesting. I noticed that most of the groups that had vertical was the tipped bullets. I don't know why! The other bullets probably averaged about 1- 1.3 inches in vertical which would lead to wind causing the horizontal differences. That is one of the reasons for doing this exercise in the first place. I thought...well I'll prove that I can shoot the Dasher and be as successful as shooting heavier bullets. To my surprise that is not how it worked on these tests. Understanding this far from a perfect test.
With that being said, virtually all who post on here could bring your equipment and whip up on me pretty good because there are many combinations as we know that can get the results and win in competition. Other custom bullets may have changed results. What if I had a 300 WSM or 6XC in the mix? I also could have worked with RL-16 and RL-23 a bit more and done the same or better.
At the end of the day....the windy conditions changed the results toward the heavy bullets in my mind. Even the 6.5 x 284 which I love shooting did well. This is a cartridge that has basically been forgotten about by many. I say thanks to the many on here who have given me invaluable advice.

With cleaning after every 30 rounds, how long does it take (how many shots) for the rifle to settle back into top accuracy? Ever try going longer without cleaning?

Thanks RR

I always chrono the first 5 shots! First is a fouler that runs about 25 fps slow. I use the next four to make sure velocity is where I expected. Normally after 5 down the tube, I'm right back where I need to be. The next 25 shots are for record. Occasionally, I have shot 1 fouler and shot for record and seen good results as well.

A full breath of rarefied air - thank you!:DRG
