Experience with Hornady V-Max bullets

I am putting together a rifle for a local match. 300 yards, Benchrest for score with a portable bench. The specified platform is a gas operated AR.

My decision tree has led me to a 6 ARC cartridge, mag length restricted, 10 twist barrel. The Hornady V-Max looks to have the right characteristics if it will shoot.

I am looking for experiences with the 87gr, 6mm V-Max. Have you been able to get good accuracy from them? Any issues with jumping due to the mag length restriction?

Thanks!

Old 100 yard target...Used for LR PDn in retired 8T 1000 Yd BR barrel. Used H380 just because I had a 8#er.

Ain't gonna win any SRBR matches but sure worked well on PDs at 800-900 yards.

I can't say I've got a "love affair" with the various V-Max's, but I seem to use more of them than anything else because they are always available and economical in the calibers I use. Both on the shelf in our little town, and on-line. jd

I have read many posts on this forum of the 87 running well in 6 BR's, etc. I think that 87 would work well, provided your barrel/rig likes it. I didn't have success with that particular bullet, though the 75 V-Max was like magic. Fortunately, there are other great actual target bullet options in that weight range if it doesn't.

For some reason that is beyond me, I could never get the 87 Vmax to shoot well in a number of my 243's. Whereas the 75 Vmax shot fine. So go figure.

I have had a great deal of success with other Vmax bullets, namely the 60 Vmax and 55 Vmax in 223 Rem bolt rifles with 8" and 12" twists respectively. They also demonstrate good terminal effect of predators and varmints.

Been shoot various hornady caliber and weight bullets for over 35 years. I have NEVER been disappointed with the bullets. I have even shot them in some varmint for score matches(admittedly not my first choice ) and did surprisingly well.
The particular bullets you are referring to has preformed great in my AR10 243 win, bolt 243 wins, 6 rem Ackley, and 6 dasher.
If your gun likes them you will very happy.

Getting back to the OP’s question…

I’ve shot a bunch of the 87 VMax bullets. Usually I got them to shoot somewhere in the 3’s after some load work. That’s fine for prairie dogs. Maybe they’re capable of better groups but when it’s all said and done they’re varmint bullets, not precision competition fodder.

In 223 the worst bullets made re the 68gr hpbt and closely followed by their 75gr hpbt.
I have two Wylde chambered uppers that would probably make you retract that statement. One is a 24" bull and the other is a 20" Hbar, and both routinely shoot in the low threes with either bullet. The 24" likes the 68s a little better and has shot its share of groups in the twos. Ain't bad for a gas gun.

I also have an R700 bolt gun, Kreiger 1:8 .223 that shoots little bitty knots with either bullet, too.

I don't think it's the bullets.

Getting back to the OP's question, I've had good-to-excellent results with V-Max bullets, but no experience with the 87 gr. 6mm. The 53 gr. V-Max is my preferred varmint/predator bullet in the centerfire 22s. They shoot as tight as most match bullets I've tried.

Don’t let the Debbie Downers stop you from giving them a serious try. I had a Savage that would shoot them well. My first zero three shot group was with the vmaxes and that gun averaged in the twos for five shot groups with the 87vmax.
