Expanding primer pockets

I usually neck size my 300WM but after a few firings the primer pocket is to loose. Does the collet die shrink the pocket when sizing?

Barry,

Whats been working for me with my 6XC is I start with Winchester primers and after about 6 to 7 firings the primer pockets loosen up and I switch to Federal Primers. The Federal Primers run a few tenths larger. When I switch the primers seat like they are new cases again. When the Federals loosen up I will switch to CCI primers which are again a few tenths larger. This is with standard rifle primers and not sure if Mag primers are or have the same size diffences. However, something you could easy check and try.

Strange on the to much pressure statement. I did a ladder test with the bullets seated far enough back to fit in the mag and came up with a load of 78gr. of H1000 and a 200gr. spbt. Shouldnt be to much pressure as thats a full grain off max. Maybe Preperation H?

Pockets that expand after a few firings are usually attributed to 3 things - hot loads, soft brass, and a oversize chamber. Of the three, the most important is the third. If you have a chamber with a tight butt fitted to the brand of brass you are using, you can shoot hot loads in soft brass and the pockets will stay tight after many firings. If you have no choice as to chamber dimensions, i.e. a factory barrel, then you have to switch brass and/or reduce your loads. Or both.

After checking Hodgden's web site I see they list a max load for the 300WM and 200gr. bullets with H1000 at 77gr. Ive been loading 78gr. cause my Sierra program says 79.1gr. is the max. Maybe I should be backing it off. I had a sweet spot show near midway up the chart if I recall.
