Executive order to ban lead bullets

Steel shot does not deform from the time ignition starts in a shot shell until all the shot has come to rest in a piece of game, therefore, steel shot penetrates deeper than lead shot. Penetration factor is based on the remaining round pellets that are left which will penetrate deeper than the deformed lead. Lead pellets start to deform upon firing. Then we get into the shot string patterns. Steel holds a much tighter pattern than does lead, somewhere in the 60-70% narrower range, which results in more pellets on the target. That deformed lead is deformed even more so once it hits that game, resulting in less energy, even though it started out with more. That is why those hard round steel pellets penetrate deeper. The gentleman providing these facts is not a new kid on the block. He was formerly the Ballistics Research Director at Oregon Institute of Technology, and then served as a Ballistics Specialist for the Dept. of the Interior. He now serves as an independent ballistics consultant and author specializing in the design and testing of shot shell loads for U.S. shot shell and reloading components manufacturers. BTW: I don't hunt with steel shot. I prefer the Tungsten Matrix.

And that is why you are shooting tungsten matrix shells at waterfowl ? I think you have already admitted that even in your opinion the heavier tungsten is preferable to steel and its major drawback is cost. I enjoy shooting passing shots and my choices at 50+ yards are steel 1's and 2's or bismuth and hevi shot 4's. The bismuth and hevishot are markedly more effective at that range. Steel is just fine for decoying ducks at 25 yards with their wings set in a landing stoop.

No, I am not. I no longer shoot waterfowl. I have nothing against the use of lead or steel shot. My preference is the Tungsten Matrix. Something I realized during my waterfowl hunting days is this…. water-fowlers will always blame a missed or failed shot on the type of pellets in the shot shell, or something other than a poor shot or lack of ability.

I'll be happy to meet you on a trap range on the 25 yard stations with you shooting steel while I shoot lead and you can pick your steel loads and I'll shoot lead 7&1/2's to test just how well that steel kills clays

:D I don't shoot steel shot, and did not say I do/did. I just read a few reviews about the Kent Velocity Steel Target shot shells. It seems they work quite well on clays;) Probably a little too pricey for the average clay shooters. Lead is much less expensive, and is one of the reasons for it's popularity.

I reload both so price isn't the factor or quality control. I can load better steel shells than Kent can just like any reloader can. The cost differential in magnum lead shot and steel shot is small. I picked the 25 yard stations on a trap range because the targets are 50 yards and beyond for me by the time I shoot and I promise there is no way in hell I can break as many targets with my 601 gr steel loads as I can with my 492 gr lead 7 1/2's. Steel shot at BPI is priced less per pound than magnum lead shot this evening.
