Exchanging Barrels

I am new to thee bench rest game. I have read here that many bench rest shooter change barrels frequently. Some even do it at a match. Some go from caliber to caliber depending on what they are shooting that day. Others use a practice barrel to fire form their brass.

How is this accomplished without a lot of precision fitting? Do you still use a go, no-go gauge?

I have a Kelby\Panda 6 PPC and would like to be able to change the caliber to 30BR and back. I realize either the case or the bolt will need to be altered to do this.

The barrels have a shoulder ahead of the threaded tenon that stops against the face of the receiver. Head space and all important breech dimensions are machined into each barrel by the gunsmith. All you need to worry about is an action wrench and barrel vice.

Nick. I’m in the middle of the same process with an old Panda. Call Kelbly’s. They will give you the scoop on modifying your bolt face. It doesn’t cost much (like $60), and they told me I shouldn’t have problems pulling PPC cases if I screw on a PPC barrel instead of running the 30BR.

Thanks Jim. I have heard this but I wasn't sure if it was true.

Please get in touch with them for yourself though Nick. I'm not a gunsmith, so all I did was relay information I received from the manufacturer. Ryan Kelbly encouraged me to go that route instead of buying a new bolt for $650 to $725.
