EVER HAD HARD CARBON BUILD UP ON AN AR15 BOLT?

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Well I found a real easy way to get it off without taking the black oxide coating off. I got out my dremal tool and they always put that little wire wheel in the assortment. Well I chucked it up and it took all of it off without disturbing the coating on the bolt. Finally a way to do it easy without much mess.I used to soak them for a couple days in hoppes and it barely touched it.I hope this helps some you guys for an easier way to clean them.

I disassemble the bolt & carrier and soak it overnight in a tray filled with mineral spirits. Loosens the carbon very well. Wipe it down and re-assemble.

I agree that Hoppes doesn't cut the carbon.

You should see my bolt after 500 rounds suppressed. I just keep it wet with my favorite lube and clean the lug recesses on occasion when headspace is affected.

The dremel and wire wheel trick works great removing carbon on the M-240 gas piston!!

Have you tried soaking your BCG with Liquid Wrench or PB?
Have been using them for a while now, $3 or so at WalMart.
Does a great job, HOWEVER dont get it anywhere near a blued gun!!

I might try try bore tech but for now the wire wheel is king.It only takes 30 seconds with a wire wheel and it does no harm to the bolt body.
