Even a blind hog...

...finds a nut sometimes...

Such is the case with me and my new rifle. After deciding to try a couple of different bullets that I have laying around I loaded up some rounds and headed to the 600 yard range at ENGC today with my friend Herb.

The weather was overcast, about 60 degrees, winds out of the N/NW at 5-10mph. It was VERY wet out today after lots of rain this week and we were relegated to shooting off the benches (no offense to you bench shooters intended).

I shot a round of 10 107 SMK's just to warm up, nothing spectacular. Then I shot some Lapua Scenar 105's and one load showed promise.

Then after changing targets I got started with the Berger 105 Target BT's that I loaded. First load was 34g of VV N150, 2.177OAL at Ogive (.018 off the lands) per Erik's direction on finding the lands. BR-2 primers, four times fired cases that were freshly annealed with primer holes de-burred (never done that before). Now I should tell you that Herb has this nifty camera set up that allows us to see the target on a screen while shooting so seeing your shots is easy.

What happened next I can not explain. According to OnTarget the 10 shot group at 600 yards measured 2.159". The nine shot group was 1.727". The 35P showed the following data. 2899/2885, M-2890, ES-14, SD-5.

Here is a picture of the group. I finally feel like things are getting somewhere. Thank you for all the help from you guys on here that have posted, e-mailed, pm'ed and called me!

Roger,

I doubt you are stupid. Not a ton of people know about the round apparently. They do know about a very similar round that came later, the 6XC. The .240 NMC is a round that was brought about by Randy Gregory and Steve Knutson many years ago now. It is a .22-250 case necked up to 6mm and when fire formed blows out to a .308 body taper with a 28 degree shoulder. From what I have been told, accuracy nodes for it at 1000 yards are around 2925-2950 and 3025-3050fps with the 105g type bullets, but that can vary depending on barrel. That being said, this load was a tad slower than that and shot pretty decent.

So, we shall see what all happens in the next couple of weeks as things develop. I want to see if I can get this gun to shoot honest sub 2" groups consistently at 600 yards. If I can, I'm going to start going to some other matches people have been inviting me to lately.

One thing I can tell you is I'm really having fun with this whole "wildcat" thing! It is fascinating to me that a person can take one piece of brass, blow it out and have an entirely different piece of brass...and I never get tired of shooting this rifle.

Joe....that sounds like what I am tinkering with...I call it 6mm SAILOR (also hav a 30 cal version/Hunter legal )...SAvage Improved LOng Range,,,it is the same as 22-250 in the body dims ...sorta like the 6mm 250 AI from the 30's-40's....I have had good results with 4350/4831/Rx-22 and 105 class bullets....thanks for the info...Roger
