Estate Sale Find

Found this shotgun shell over the weekend at an Estate Sale. It's a Eley-Kynoch 4 gauge shell. Pictures show a 12 gauge shell for comparisons.

Bet the recoil from that sucka in a 15# gun would result in most of your grandkids having a stutter! Probably no autos made in that bore me thinks.

Think they mounted the guns on the bow of a small boat. When the ducks were all landed it was shot. Then all the ducks were "toast" at once.

That was not fired in a shoulder gun. If it was, that person never did it again.

Also agree with CaptainMal's analysis. If you want a great description of these guns and how they were used, get ahold of a copy of James Michener's book "Chesapeake", which contains detailed descriptions of their use for market hunting ducks and geese on the Chesapeake Bay in the late 1800s.

Actually, a punt gun is a punt gun. This is a 4 bore, and if you read your big game hunting history you'll see that 8 and 4 gauge doubles were used in Africa and other places for dangerous game (think elephant). These were even done in rifles, and they are shoulder fired. There is a 4 bore shotgun for sale on Gunsamerica right now. Very neat find though, especially being from Kynoch.

Read a story years back of a guy that had one of those boats that only stuck about 4" above the water with a mounted seems like 4" or so bore cannon of sorts that was loaded with several POUNDS of shot and about 2' above water surface. He would get within range and shoot a 2 Bore and when the ducks or whatever flock he was hunting just started to rise from the water fire the blunder buss of shot and then continue shooting the 2 Bore until all were out of range. IIRC there kill would/could sometimes be in the hundreds. This is also when they were hunting for all them Purdy birds with plumage for ladies hats. One of the reasons bag limits etc were introduced. This was out along the east coast.

I know a guy here that has an 8 guage but never seen a 2 or 4 bore in person.
