I suggest if the area gets pressure you be prepared to walk. I walk fences and shoot off the posts. I also have a low folding chair and I shoot with sticks. A tripod would be even better. I get a lot of easy shots like this when shots from the bench near the roads are few and far.

I think there are several states that have laws about which species of prairie dog and ground squirrel can be shot, let alone when. I'd much rather shoot them than see the species die off from the plaque - but then, I'm not a rancher losing thousands due to the damage done by the vermin. I do know that private ranch areas I and my friends have really hammered hard in a given year never came back as they were - even after 5-10 years. But those sage rats seemingly multiply overnight.

That is an almost identical wood rack setup I have in my suburban! I couldn't get all my crap in the truck without it.

I went to a place I had shot ground squirrels for the past 50 years a while back. Hadn't been there in a few years. Before long, the Sheriff showed up, saying I had to leave, saying this National Forest was closed to shooting. While it WAS closed to target shooting (fire hazard they say....), not so for hunting - which is what I was doing. I explained this to him. He didn't believe I was hunting (had my rotating table set up and no "quarry" in sight). I had to point out a distant squirrel, asked him if O.K. for me to shoot, then shot the squirrel. He was not pleased but did not know what to do. I nicely explained I had been doing this, where we stood, since possibly before his father was born. He finally left. A lot of folks would have just packed it up and obeyed his order. And that is what it is getting to be like on a lot of public land around where I live.

Good on ya. Tell them you kick rocks. If you start a fire it’ll be the power companies fault anyway.
 
The best hunting is as close as possible to private land much of the time. However, my favorite thing about hunting is the solitude. No hunting, and no law harassing me. I drive further, 4x4, and miss the best opportunities to be alone and never get harassed. I also have integrity and follow the law, even when nobody is watching. The yahoos shooting every sign and everything that moves have ruined it for the average law abiding sportsman...I blame Obama...
 
Don’t forget to bring a light lunch and some snacks. Plenty of water or sports drinks. I also have an umbrella that I can mount to the table for some shade. That works good if it isnt too windy.

Really nice Urbanrifleman 6br barrel on this rifle! Recommend his barrels!

Yes - there are a lot of shooters who are "yahoos". In our local public land, we get a lot of "big city" folks who would bring T.V. sets, bottles and all kinds of crap, set them up and shoot them - and just leave the stuff there. Really ruins it for everyone. Being their "once a year" bit of fun, they think little of the consequences. Perhaps a new law (and I hate new laws, in general) requiring 30 days of mandatory community service picking up trash for first time offenders would make those bone heads think twice. Would be a good additional topic in hunter education classes and such.

I'm definitely sure I would NOT hang that stock anywhere near a post let alone BARBED WIRE! :eek:;)
