erratic seating depths when seating bullets with my wilson die

just another heads up. I was getting erratic seating depths while I was seating bullets. VERY UNUSUAL!!! and a problem:mad:. im seating bullets for a seating depth test and the variance would nullify the test. wasn't sure what to do so I took the die apart and CLEANED IT really well. problem gone!!!!!:). yes im loading today and had some difficulties to overcome. im ready to shoot a small group at 654 yards( our ranges 600 yard line is in meters;)) and figured id share some of my experiences, might just help someone else:D:D:D. bryant

always clean then if new,,buy a new truck, first thing people do is wash it the next day..

Good information! I’ve had the same problem lately and was using high end bullets. Been trying to figure it out in my head but maybe you just solved it. Lol. Will try cleaning the die

What are you guys using to clean the dies with?
I just use hoppes #9 powder solvent. I have been using it in my barrels for a LONG time after I get done with everything else. it also cleans my dies great, it also leaves a coating that helps prevent corrosion. lots of cleaners out there and I know a bunch of guys on here don't like ANYTHING with the word hoppes on it. it has worked for me though. good luck, bryant:)

After cleaning the sliding parts, wipe it dry with a cleaning patch and put just a hint of Hobo Oil on it. I think there is a guy on this site that sells it.:D

What no Hobo? I’m disappointed...That stuff is like Frank’s you gotta put it on everything.
I don't know if im right or wrong about this, but I don't put any oil on my seating dies, anywhere. I have before and the oil was getting on the bullet and I was getting erratic velocities. since then, no more oil, just the hoppes and wipe it REALLY good. at that point, im done:cool:

I put my wilsons in the tumbler with corncob media and ran for 4 hours, they not only look better but they are CLEAN!!!

I use Wilson seaters for all m bottle neck cartridges. Been using them for years. Recently added VLD bullet seater drifts to several of my long range target dies and am pleased with the results.
