Engraving firearm

Anybody engrave a gun with their name? I received a 1911 as a retirement present and I wanted to engrave (laser) my name, dates of service and emblem. I don't want to clutter the gun so I'd keep it minimal. I know one of my kids will want it so I don't think it would be sold down the line, just passed on.

Anybody have one done? Thanks for looking.

Another place to check out is a funeral home or monument maker. They will generally have a laser for headstones and monument work. I use ours locally for all of my engraving needs and he only charges a few bucks.

Or you can find someone who can actually hand engrave to do it right. This was a gift from a good friend 40yrs ago and has lived in my pocket ever since.....

Years ago at a local used gun store the owner showed me a rifle he had just taken in from an estate. The departed owner had engraved his name and soc. sec. # in the receiver with a hardware store electric engraver- nice and deep.
It was a pre 64 Winchester M70 in 257 Roberts- still makes my eyes well up a bit thinking about it.

Thanks to all, turns out there's a place that ceracoats and laser engraves here in town so, I don't have to send out and support the local business. Drove by it lots of times but it's tucked in a series of buildings so hard to see.

I've seen some samples and looks like good work. I do want a badge with some detail so I'm wondering how fine the laser can get. Maybe they'll do a sample before putting it on my pistol.

I'd also like to inlay some tie tack badges in the grips but need to find someone else for that unless they can laser out a cut in the grips and I'll epoxy in the inserts, I'll have to ask.

I wonder about putting my name but as I hope it becomes a family heirloom to be passed around maybe it will stay in the family.

Might check with your local jewelry store, some do basic engraving. I had one a longtime ago that would do some work for me on 1911 slides.

I worked as a bench jeweler in a high-end custom shop ATL. We used this guy in the late 80's and he's still in business.

His work is fantastic. I point him out to show what type of engraving I would be seeking for a piece with the emotional attachment of this piece and that I was looking to pass to later generations. I would treat it as buy once, cry once.

Find someone who will hand engrave...this is a one off family heirloom. The last thing you want is a product that has been given the consideration as "looks about right" and "stick it in and press go".

Think about the piece, and the message you want to pass on with a piece of art and design that is "yours".
This has more emotional value than a tattoo ever will...this is for generations to come and pass down the line.
You want something that can never go to pawnshop and he accepted, but can only stay in the family.

Take your time and think carefully, and never look back with doubt!

One last thing - if it was my preference, I would insist on traditional hand engraving over air assisted engraving.
It looses the personality of the engraver, and just looks"too pretty" for what it is...
