empty chamber flags

The local 4h kids use some huge orange weedeater line with a surveyor ribbon on one end. They are long enough they go in the chamber and stick out the muzzle. They use these on shotguns and rifles. Great idea

So if my rifle is in my case I would have to have one in my chamber in order to open my case and move it to my bench? Or if not in a case I have to insert one to carry my rifle to the bench? Have you had accidents there or do you just think other people aren't capable of thinking for themselves? I have never been to a range that is this strict!
I realize it is imposing a terrible hardship on our members, but they will have to comply.
my plan is to make the first flag free if they don't already have one. if they need more than one they will be $.50 each. a terrible financial hard ship, but necessary. PS mister sculley, don't bother to show up at our range

If dsculley shows up at your range and complies, he should by all right be able to shoot, or are YOU going complete Gastopo on him?

I've never used chamber flags, but I've never been to very large or busy ranges. I'm a bit of a hermit, and I leave any place with more than 3 or so guns firing, particularly if they're excessively loud.

I'm curious how everyone is ok with pushing a zip tie or weed whacker cord into their barrel, seems like it could cause damage.

Just for my edification on current ediquette; is bolt out of the rifle not enough or acceptable anymore? That was the rule at the club I used to belong to and was what I was taught, in combination with not approaching the benches while folks are downrange, respectful distance is 10ft or so, so that folks down range can see you're not near the guns.

Plastic weed whacker line hurt your barrel? Maybe in about a thousand years of insertion/removal...

At my range, it is, as is an open bolt. However:

The outdoor range has 12 pistol lanes, and 6 rifle lanes. At cease fire, all firearms are inspected to ensure no cartridges in the guns, and all mags out of the receivers. While they don't require them (yet), chamber flags allow the RSO to simply walk by, as the flag shows that the chamber is empty from a distance (no need to visually inspect the chamber.)

Many competitions require the use of an ECI nowadays.
