Eley vs Lapua question

I've tried looking around but can't seem to find a definitive answer on this and while I've well versed on F Class, .22 on a competitive level is pretty foreign. I know I can got to places like Killough and get boxes of Tenex by speed but it seems everywhere I go to look for Midas+ there's never options. Am I just not looking in the right place or does Lapua just do things differently than Eley? TIA for any help.

The MV's that used to be printed on Eley product boxes were an average of muzzle velocities across several test barrels. The actual MV of any lot of Eley will vary by barrel.

Lapua gives an average MV for its .22LR ammo. It's derived from the first two digits of the lot number, to which the number 3 is added to give the average MV in meters/second for that lot. For example, if a Lapua lot number began with 28, that means that the average MV of that lot across Lapua's test barrels was 328 m/s (or about 1076 fps).

Having said all that, however, don't worry about buying .22LR match ammo based on any published information about a lot's average MV. More important is how it shoots, and with match .22LR ammo muzzle velocity doesn't determine performance.

A lot of either Eley or Lapua will either shoot or it won't. It doesn't depend on it's average muzzle velocity.

No not at all. I wanted to test a variety but didn't know how to order Midas+ if I did. It's a tricked out CZ457 MTR fwiw.
I hear you. For some reason its been almost impossible to get in the US. Strangely there are a number of Canadian places that have it in stock and have had it in stock for quite awhile. If I am not mistaken Champion’s Choice lets you place back orders. Good luck in your quest.

Test, test and test again. Variety is the spice of life. My Vudoo repeater did not care much for Midas+

I started ARA prior to moving to F Class. As much as I like to test time and money was not on my side. If truly looking for the best ammo to run thru your build. In my opinion send it to Eley and Lapua test chambers to see the results. It took a lot of work out of it for me.
I can honestly say ARA shorten the learning curve to F Class in reading wind. Now with high costs of components I am going back to my roots this year and spend some time in ARA.

There may be an error in the information above.

The third number, number "5", is said to represent the machine on which the ammo was loaded.

That number 5 represents the "bullet" used. The same bullet is used in Center X, Midas +, and X-Act.
All lot numbers of those varieties will have a "5" as the third digit.

Below is a lot number label on a case of Lapua CX ammo.

Yep, l'll second that. @30cents apiece for primers l can buy ''3'' 22lr rounds.
Then shoot them in a CZ457 that's blue steel and walnut, QUALITY built like Remingtons and Winchesters were 40yrs ago.

If you are fortunate enough to "hang out" with other serious RF shooters, you could possibly try some of their ammo in your setup. It will/could tell you what your gun likes/prefers. Then you could go on the hunt for that particular ammo. They may have some ammo that doesn't shoot all that well in their gun, and be willing to sell it to you as well.

I was able to buy some Eley Black box ammo for my new set up SOLELY on the speed from some lot testing that I was able to do during the initial break-in of my V22-s. There is a long long story behind this, but will spare you. I knew going in to this purchase, that it was 50/50 at best that my set up would like/shoot this additional black box ammo, and GOT LUCKY as my V22-s shoots both lots very well.

So, buying ammo by speed only provides you "some" level of comfort, or helps you make an educated decision, BUT it's not a guarantee by any means as RF ammo is soooooooo lot dependent. I got lucky and know it, acknowledge it and accept that it will probably never happen again. GL
