Electronic Powder Measurers: Lyman vs. All Others?

Yes. Don't bother. Inaccurate, relative to RCBS very difficult to empty and clean. You will be spending a lot of time trickling in powder or removing same with tweezers or redumping powder into the hopper. My Gen 6 went back to Brownells for full refund and replaced it with the RCBS. RCBS will not underthrow. Lyman will.

Please also be aware the electronic dispensers are accurate to +/_ .1 grains. That means that any given throw as against the next one can be 3/10 grain different. There are $600 scales and or a Gempro (that will measure to .02 grains) if you are so inclined.

For ALL powder dispensers:
download manual and read it.
How quick is it to calibrate?
How easy is it to clean out?
Is it programmable if you want to fine-tune for a specific load?
I have only used the original RCBS (PACT built) and the ChargeMaster powder dispensers. The ChargeMaster is superior in every way. The only calibration when yo change powder is to set the charge weight about 1gn under target and let it dispense (or, simply set the target weight and know that you are going to have it over shoot the first charge, which you return to the hopper and go on with your business). It tends to over-shoot with new powder, so the 1 gn under means it will be very close to target. After dispensing, re-set to correct target and hit the dispense button.
The PACT-built model had to go through almost a hopper of powder during the calibration process.
The worst over shoot I have ever seen was 0.2gn. I have never seen an under shoot. If you can't stand a 0.1gn overshoot, wet you finger slightly and remove about two kernels of powder and you'll have the target weight.

Thanks guys, that's all good information. And you're all right, after the $75 rebate the Chargemaster will be $225.

I've received checks from RCBS the last two years, including $75 for my Chargemaster purchase earlier this year. RCBS rebate checks are slow in arriving, but they do arrive. Just make sure you purchase qualifying items and follow all their required steps when applying for the rebate.

And yes, I do love my Chargemaster, and at this point, can't imagine reloading without it!

I guess you can lump my recommendation in with the "others" mentioned in the title of the thread. The FX-120i + Auto tricker is a massive step up for precise powder charges.

$710 CD = $540 USD http://cambridgeenviro.com/productD...andD-5-Year-Warranty-Top-Loading-Balance-5780
$199 http://www.autotrickler.com/

For approximately 3-4x the cost, you get 5x the resolution. .02 grain resolution versus .1 grain. Depending on what you plan to do with your ammo, this may or may not seem reasonable. I sure like the one I have.

If you want to take it even farther, the auto trickler is now available for the Satorius line of scales, which I believe measure to .01 grain.

If you are just starting out...keep it simple:). I would be hesitant to jump in with an automated dispenser unless you are loading 50+ rounds each setting. Keep it simple and cheap at first....this forum will find plenty of ways to spend your money as you advance:D.

I like my Gen 6 Lyman too, it's now linked with an A&D scale and an Omega trickler. For me its the most efficient and accurate reloading process in years.

I called my local shop to ask about the ChargeMaster. Now you have to understand that this guy is our area's authority on this stuff, he has and sells EVERYTHING.

He told me that he can't remember the last time that he sold a ChargeMaster. He mostly sells the Lyman's because they're continually updating their product. He also said that since his distributors don't have any ChargeMasters and since they're running such a big sale, that I might want to wait and see if an updated product is going to be released.

Now I'm really confused. Lol

Don't be confused.. he is a salesman and he is trying to put a spin on you to buy the Lyman. Of course the warehouse is out of those RCBS units.. he can't keep them in stock.. he is over run with the Lyman is trying to get you to help alleviate that problem...

After playing with the Hornady digital scale vs my Lyman beam scale, I will stick with the beam scale for accurate shooting. Because of that, I'm not ready to pony up for a Charge master or equivalent. The digital scales will vary you loads. Just my opinion.
