Gentlemen: I'm the target shooter. My brother is the hunter. His hearing isn't as sharp as it used to be after spending over 20 years on an Air Force flight line. Does anyone know of a low-profile electronic earmuff suitable for hunting ??? Something sensitive enough to pickup wildlife sounds yet quickly muffle the noise of a large caliber rifle. Your input is appreciated.

I use a pair of Pro Ears low profile muffs. Low profile muffs will not have the same NRR as thick muffs just because there is less room for sound deadening material. In the ear,expensive ones) will always be better.
Look for muffs that taper the loud sounds rather than just cut off loud sounds. The rapid cut-out and cut-in is very distracting.
I think you will get what you pay for. Pro Ears seem to come in the middle of better than average performance for a decent price. If I win the lottery, I'm going for a $2,500 pair of in the ear models.
If you get too much amplification then that squirrel over there will sound like an elephant.

Id definitely look at some form of low profile muffs and maybe also coat the cheek area of the stock just in case if clearance is not very great. I hate wearing plugs or muffs on a stand while hunting. What I decided on was size small silicone earplugs made by bilsom,555 or 556) and just leave one side in and put the other side in when im ready to shoot. Since they do not have to be squished they are a piece of cake. Id like to try a hearing aid though. I dont know that id be happy with the pressure of muffs for very long.

Love 'em too....until they break. Their warranty period starts on day of manufacture! With the 'X', you are good for 5 years but the other models are 1 year. I purchased a set that ended up being 9 months from date of manufacture...so in effect...3 months of warranty. They needed a repair at 11 months post purchase and was denied a warranty repair and got some snarky email responses and blaming of the vendor for selling me an out of warranty item!!! Eventually I wore them down and prevailed but they were far from pleasant in their handling of the issue. I also informed the vendor, who sells a high volume of the MSA muffs, and they were unaware that the warranty played out like it did. They have been in communication with me on their efforts to sort this out with MSA. So....buyer beware.
