electronic bore cleaner,homemade)

There are instructions on the web to make a electronic bore cleaner and it is easy to make and cheap. Solution used is
50% distilled water; 25% household ammonia; and 25% vinegar.
They are either battery driven or 3v power supply. Cycle time is 40 minutes and they are supposed to work well with no etching if you control the current to 100 ma. Easy to do.
It removes copper.
Has anyone tried one of these? Anyone have inputs on + or - with the gadget?

http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm for the electronic bore cleaner, under copper removal). Site has tons of info on Gun cleaning products you make yourself.
I made the electronic bore cleaner and used it on two rifles that are a little older. They were always cleaned well with Hoppes #9, JB, and Butch's. I kept the current below 100 ma.
Both rifles had copper removed from the bore. Very easy to use and with good results. You can see the results very readily.

Though intriguing, I'd be really careful when using electronic bore cleaners, especially homemade ones. They are the shooter's implementation of what analytical chemists call "anodic stripping voltammetry", an old polarographic technique for analysing trace metals. It can also be thought of as "reverse electroplating". It is the potential, voltage) that is used that will determine which metals are "stripped" from the anode, which is in this case, the barrel. The current merely indicates the rate at which metal is being removed. Ohm's law is followed in this scenario, so to get more current, you must increase the voltage. When you do that, there is a danger that other metals will be removed from the steel. So, my advice would be "slow and steady". You need the minimum voltage necessary to see copper beginning to dissolve, and nothing more !!! Don't be tempted to speed up the cleaning by "cranking up the voltage". If you make a homemade one, it would be worthwhile adding the voltage controls suggested on http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm

I know that mine is not home made. I bought a outers many years ago. I have taken many guns people thought needed new bbls and cleaned them. went from 2" down to 1/2". Have one gunsmith that brings me guns to clean for his customers.
like someone else said do take it slow and easy.

Of note, if you make one, the NEGATIVE connects to the rod, NOT the barrel.

I have four that are home made - 3 different rifle lengths and one for pistol.

I dilute a 1/4 ounce of Hoppe's #9 with warm water. No sense in making a home brewed chemical that you know nothing about.

The rod will come out looking like a fuzzy caterpillar...even on a "clean" rifle...you will be surprised.
