Electrolysis barrel cleaning

Why is this not used more? Seems like it's never mentioned on barrel cleaning threads. It's all about the different solvents and methods yet seems like a lot less work if it works as people say.

I know the Outers system is no longer available but DIY instructions are out there. While not practical at the range during a match it does seem to work by those that use it. Just curious.

I used the outer s foul out system for years on my 1911 bullseye wad gun. 15 minutes, 99% of the lead removed .
Excellent device. I have the rifle rod and chemical for copper but never used it. I use PatchOut.

I had one 25-30 years ago and never used it. Finally gave it to the Border Patrol armorer, don't know if he ever used it.

Who was it, I was familiar with a couple of them. To be clear they were gunsmiths, not armorers, who got into the Border Patrol and worked at the academy.

Still have mine collecting dust, have not used it "in a while." Need to check the chemical supply as I thought about using it again. Had success when I did use it, then started moving...

I don't remember his name, but he was in Del Rio back then, their station was in Comstock.

Used that method on BP barrels. Got it clean enough to show me the barrel was JUNK!! And the Electrolysis method kills the hell out of a blued finish.

I’ve built them to remove rust from barrel on old shotguns and milsurps
Always used baking soda and water
They work well on metal fouling, not so much in carbon but does loosen it up where it comes out easier with a brush
I would think that if carbon gets layered over copper when the copper is removed carbon has to be easier to clean but just an assumption on my part.

Maybe some of that was going on, the layering, it absolutely pulled all metal fouling out and the water ended up being like a black soup, prob a mix of carbon and iron oxides
Anyway a normal cleaning with brushes and solvent after always improved things and was pretty easy

i had started to build on many years ago and found a tutorial on how to make it. i required a cell phone charger and I had a stash of those. Wish i could find the website that had that tutorial.

If you do a Google search using "Electrolytic barrel cleaning" you will find lots of articles and YouTube videos regarding the process and how to build a unit.
