ejection/extraction

Hello All,

Remington 700, PTG bolt with m-16 extractor dropping the case as it is being pulled out
Usually half way to almost all the way out. does it with snap caps, after firing, and
with spent cases

I pulled out the ejector and the extractor pulls case all the way out no issues,
If I pull the bolt and place a case in the face the ejector seems to have plenty
of spring.

Any advice? Could the spring have to much or not enough tension?
this one has me stumped.

Thank you for any help

You can eaisly shorten the ejector spring, most have way too much tension anyway. Take 1 coil off then try it. I do it with side cuts and have it in a small plastic baggie so you don't lose it

When you slowly pull the bolt backwards and look at the position of the case as it is being extracted is the front of the case riding on the inside bore of the action or is it riding into the raceway for the bolt lugs? This will depend on the placement of the ejector plunger. I ask because I had this exact problem several years ago and was able to correct it. Sounds like extractor is not holding the case very well which is unusal for a M-16 extractor.

Standard head size for a 30/06

It is a ptg came assembled so I am assuming it is their extractor
You might try a Magnum extractor. Sometimes there's more clearance in the bolt face than there should be , allowing the case head to be pushed far enough that the claw doesn't catch like it should. Might require some fitting of the extractor if you try a magnum one. I avoid PT&G and usually use a Badger. I have used mini 16 extractors from PT&G, but I always buy the magnum and fit it. With a m16 style, bolts weren't intended to be operated slowly. Think about how a AR or M16 moves. Operating slowly, the plunger ejector will spit it out too soon.

Ordered the badger. thanks for the input.
should I take some of the spring out of the ejector?

I have a gunsmith friend that has found a cure for Rem. 700s that drops a case before it clears the ejection port. He removes the ejector from the bolt and removes .010-.015 from the bottom of the cut on the ejector with a file or Dremel tool. This allows the ejector to protrude out more and hold pressure on the spent cartridge until it clears the ejection port and is ejected. Do not cut the spring, you will need the pressure to hold the ejector against the cartridge. This works particularly well on shorter cases like BR's. I've seen several 700's with this modification and has worked on all of them.

It's a combination of the counterbore depth and ID chamfer of the bolt. I had to learn this when I started installing Sako extractors. Nose depth was to shallow and a good chamfer allowed the case head to kick sideways when the case cleared the chamber and made contact with the action. The geometry/angle is worse with shorter cases. My solution was .140" depth with a very small chamfer and things worked. If I was making bolts I would use the standard Remington .150" depth. Then the phone would never ring.
