Egg shoots

For every poster on this Forum and too many others who have claimed "my rifle will shoot under dime-sized groups all day no matter what ammo" -- you know who you are -- put M&Ms (not the peanut kind) at 300y and show us how it's done. They won't melt in your hand.

Thread deviation: regarding group size, don't be showing 3-shot groups unless you're posting in a hunting thread. And if there is space at all between adjacent bullet holes, then your group CANNOT be smaller than the diameter of the bullet. Posters (or is it "posers") who measure the undersized holes in paper left by bullets and then subtract full bullet diameter are only kidding themselves. All day long.
Het Nate, I do most of my load deleopment with 2 shot groups. Can I show mine? Lol. Seriously, I look at a lot of the groups on here and shake my head for one of two reasons....no three. A. Really, you like THAT group. B. You measure it HOW, lmao. C . And you do this in actual competition? I think below everyone screen name should be listed what they shoot, couple of examples. Bench rest short range.....Bench rest long range ........Recreational..........PRS.........Xcourse.........Steel.....Hunting. It would a big help when trying to pass on useable information.

We've had them at my range since about 2000. At first we had six a year and as the proficiency grew we started adding paper targets, then switched to all BR targets, then joined IBS. We still have one a year as a memorial to one our shooters who passed on. It's messy, but the crows love it and even the shells are soon gone. It is the most fun competition there is for me. Nothing like vaporizing an egg. Originally we were "factory only". Then we added "factory hot rods" which were new trigger, different stock, etc. Most all shooters in those early matches were using Savage 12 BVSS or equivalent with a few Ruger Mk-IIs. Then the Coopers and Sakos came along and we put them in "hot rod" class for a while. Then customs came along and we made a custom class and let the unmodified Coopers and Sakos go as Factory Stock. The guys had a saying that to win you had to beat a Savage. Anybody can buy a Cooper, but you still have to shoot it.

We shoot three relays of five eggs each (five shots and five eggs) in 10 minutes. No wind flags, no accessories, no one-piece bags. Only bipod and rear bag or two bags. We usually run +/- 35 shooters, some shoot both classes. Any ties are broken by a five eggs shoot-off, one at a time until someone misses. Those still clean then shoot one shot at a paper bullseye with closest to center winning.

Lots of fun, we love it here. We give T-shirts, trophies, donated stuff and make a few bucks for the club.

Here's mine, just a plain old gun that will kill a pig at maybe 100 yards. Minute of pig, how much is that.

Pirate, either recreational or hunting. For what it's worth I have had several members express to me they would like something along those same lines.

A club I visit shoots 4 or 5 per year. It’s competitive. 100 yard Benchrest with .22lr. 5 minutes of unlimited sighters, then 10 minutes, 10 shells and 10 eggs. Tie breaker shoot offs are on paintballs. Eggs are shot on their side, no jumbo eggs. No wind flags.

EGG Shoots

A club I belong to has egg shoots.
Shot from a bench. 22LR @ 100 yards, front rest allowed, the rear of the butt stock rested on the shooters non-trigger hand(shooting mitts allowed on the non-trigger hand as a padded rest). Typically 5 sighters and then 5 shots at 5 eggs in seven minutes. Repeated 3 times for a total of 15 eggs.

Centerfire too, 200 yards and 300 yards different formats at different clubs.

I've been involved with this solution several times. We've used the chalk cubes in various colors which are real crowd pleasers when hit.

The best solution for our area are the charcoal brickets. Full frontal profile for the main relays then shootoffs get to shoot at the brickets turned sideways. Lots of fun and lots of shooters!

@Kurz

Right on! I’m thinking about trying one at our home club in the afternoon after our groundhog shoot. Charcoal and chalk would be easier to keep on hand for an impromptu event.

While I prefer the chalk, the charcoal brickets work out the best because we always have it on hand for cookouts!;):) We just buy more bags of the cheapest charcoal for the shooting contests and we reserve the Kingsford for the cooking!:p

Not sure the OP got his question answered.
Here are some things to consider no matter which target you choose,
cost, easy availability, ease of handling without breakage, storability for excess between matches, racks for hanging, method of hanging, scorability, mess and cleanup, ease of hanging, time to change targets.
No matter what you choose to do I highly recommend proving it out before match day.
Problems I have encountered.
Lack of help
hole through poker chip no breakage
chipped edges on other targets with no breakage (How do you score these)
How many yardages
How many classes 22lr, factory, modified, AR, custom ect. what scopes allowed, what rests
How to break ties (shootoff)
Some problems I have encountered.
eggs break easily in handling, you can chip one without it exploding, can't tell it was a hit without going down range. Time consuming to setup and hang. Hard to store long term between matches.
Balloons always explode unless hit high on the neck.
don't break easily even when dropped
can be sized according to yardage or class need
can be stored in five gallon buckets between matches
easy to hang from unfolded paperclip
It's easy to do about anything with only 5-6 people who all help but as the numbers go up so do the problems. It take about 25-30 minutes for each relay plus another 30 minutes to move target frames for each yardage. How much time do you have available?
This ain't all but it's a start. Lots to think about
.
