Education on Redfield sights

Hey, fellas. I'm gathering parts to put together a plinker rifle, and would like to put irons on it instead of a scope (for now, at least. My eyes may tell me different). For the record, this will be for fun, not competition, using a Remington 700 RH SA receiver. I'm thinking the older Redfield front and rear sights would fit the bill and look right for what I'm wanting to do, so here's my questions...

-From what I've read, the Olympics were the 1st version, with the Internationals being an improvement over the Olympics and the Palma being the final improved version. The only differences I've found though is the Palma aperture lens threads are different to accommodate Gehmann (sp?) sights? Is this correct, or is there more here?

-The front hood sight looks to be unchanged throughout. The front sight block is what sets the height of the sight. Again, is this correct?

-Since they're numbered, I've looked for references on the rear sight blocks which attaches to the receiver, but haven't found one yet. Are they referenced in older Redfield print catalogs only? Can someone point me to a reference for these?

Any info/references/help in general on these sights would be appreciated. Just wanting to get an idea of what to look for & what I'm looking at before digging out my wallet. Thanks guys,

Jim

Champions Choice has front and rear sight mounts. The rear sight mounts are conventionally screwed to the side of the receiver so two holes would need to be drilled and tapped. If you do not want to drill and tap the receiver you can use a picatinney rail on top that uses the factory scope base holes and use a Lipski adapter (Creedmoor Sports or OK Weber have them) for Redfield sights.
The front sight uses bases of varying heights. They require two holes drilled and tapped dead center of the barrel. If your barrel is heavy enough (more than .750" diameter at the muzzle) you can have the muzzle turned down to .750" to accept a barrel band/sight base (Champions Choice). This makes it easier to make windage changes so as to keep your rear sight zeroed mechanically. Either way works, drilling and tapping the holes will be cheaper.
To find a front base of the correct height measure the height of your rear sight aperture in it's lowest position from the center of your bolt/barrel bore. Be as precise as you can as every .001" makes a difference. Choose a sight base height that puts the center of your front sight at a similar height as your measurement of the rear sight or slightly higher. Front base heights run from as low as .175" to .875" so there is broad latitude there.

Otto is out of the Lipski Redfield adapters.

Win/Rem700-40X receiver sight bases for WTC/Redfield etc sights are available in .490",.590",.670",.750" heights if memory serves me correctly.
(.490" &/or .590" work for 99% of Rem 700/40X rear sight set ups)

Receiver sight base measurement procedure-
Measure C/L of bore to C/L of front sight tunnel & subtract .650"
(this procedure is for a 36" sight radius, but will get you in the game)

Give yourself a couple minutes of down elevation instead of bottoming out the rear sight to allow for changing light conditions.

Someone makes an adapter for the Gehmann iris to the redfield palma sight. It is getting harder to find one of the sights that isn't warn out.

Yep, but then again there are adapters for the Gehmann sights on Internationals. I think most shunned the Palma's for some reason that escapes me right now. I have used the Internationals but much prefer a newer sight from Phoenix Precision with the 6 color Gehmann. If you don't mind spending a little more, you'll get a lot more sight.

Redfields will shake themselves to pieces.

Purchase a Warner Tool Co rear sight that you could pass down to the next generation(s).

From yesteryear-
17mm front sight tunnels are used for 3 position smallbore applications.
18mm & 22mm front sights were used in fullbore until 30mm front sight tunnels were introduced 10-15years ago.

Out of Stock at $780.00 each? May be a very nice sight, but the Phoenix Precision is only $400.00 or so and I like them equally well.

aperturesnmore use to make an adapter to fit the Gehman iris on the Olympic and International sights,,

the Palma sight has a spring inside to keep the backlash to a minimum..

sorry ,I just saw this is an older thread,,
