Eclipse!!

We had one a few days after I brought home my first son from the hospital. We sat out on the driveway and watched it. It was the quietest I can remember Columbia, MO being since I've lived here. There wasn't car on the road anywhere.

Last fall, I caught a partial eclipse while hunting in Colorado. I dropped this dove right as it was starting to get dark.

When I was younger, I never thought things like this were a big deal, but as I've got older, I appreciate it more.

The way the sun, earth, and moon has to be lined up perfectly is a lot like what goes into shooting a pinwheel X at 1000 yards.

My little brother has a home in Wapakoneta Ohio & I own the property next to his. Our families & a few friends will gather for a meal & the eclipse. We are excited, but we geeky like that.

I thought about driving up to the lake to see it. That thought was very short lived. I can’t see driving an hour and forty five minutes for four minutes of darkness.
I'm just a couple of miles from Presque Isle. The place will become a
traffic nightmare. I'm heading 12 miles south to Waterford the night
before.

I got a chuckle from one of the grandsons......Hey Pappa Gary, can I
use one of your welding helmets ?? I have 3, and all are in the trunk
of the car so I don't forget.....

I kept thinking about going back to Ohio to see friends and family for it, but knowing Ohio weather it will be cloudy and rainy. LOL.

Then thought about heading north to VT, but again in early spring, who knows what kind of weather to expect.

I think the safest bets are to head southwest, but those places are already booked.

They have these new electronic wonders called televisions!! Expert photographers are gonna take videos using million dollar cameras with all the best filters. They’re going to show them videos on them thar televisions FOR FREE!! Why would anyone drive hundreds of miles and burn all that gas . What happened to that “Save the planet” thing? I guess that gets forgotten when they want to have some fun?

A bit of eclipse history in Maine. The last total was on July 20, 1963. I talked my father into driving 70 miles north in Maine onto the center line. We drove up, all the way, in a pouring rain storm. I had to talk him out of turning back twice. We found a good western looking ridge and setup. About 10 minutes before totality the rain stopped, the clouds dissipated and we saw a wonderful total eclipse. As the moon moved off the solar disk, the clouds returned and we drove home in the rain. Point being, get off your arse and see the event, the last one in the US until 2079. It is an awesome sight.

If you go and see the eclipse you will forever pat yourself on the back. Bring a pair fo low power binos and some eclipse glasses if you want to watch the moon creep across the solar disk. Not needed once totality occurs.

So no motel, hotel, BNB or campgrounds have any rentals left. Maybe I need to rent the front of our property.

I remember years ago during a national championship game (don't remember if it was a Super Bowl or a World Series), quite a few people is the SF Bay Area were renting yard space for people to camp out in.

True, but you can watch a TV Show about the rain forests or the national parks or any other number of incredible destinations, but I'd rather go on a hike in Glacier National vs watch it on TV
