EC Bullet Sorting Die, what is it?

I know Eric Cortina’s bullet sorting die should be what it says, but from the description on his site, I’m not fully understanding. Maybe somebody here who had one can chime in. Is it the same as a Redding Instant indicator?

It goes with his bullet flow system and has caliber specific collets. Pretty bad ass in simplifying bullet sorting.

I'm guessing that it measures bullet base to ogive as he never goes into any detail regarding what it measures
Using my digital calipers and SAC bullet comparators (22, 6mm, 6.5 ) is just as quick and one helluva lot less expensive than this system.

Plus it enables him sort bullets while pointing without handling them, he just has to remove them at the indicator step.

Erik states it measures OAL at ~13:35. FWIW - sorting bullets by OAL is typically necessary to obtain uniform [length] points and it may also slightly improve precision in and of itself.

I don't see where OAL provides information to act on.
It's every summation of base + bearing + nose lengths, and you still don't know which is in variance for any particular bullet.

Bullet construction provides the following individual drag contributors:
-base diameter
-base length
-base angle
-bearing length
-nose length
-ogive radius
-meplat diameter
-bullet diameter
-bullet weight

OAL is a summation of 3 of them.
So you can have two bullets with the same OAL having different BC.
You can have two bullets with different OAL having same BC.
How do you act on this, with predictable result, while you're not even measuring the individual contributors of OAL?

At least mathematically, it seems a foolish shortcut.
