Easy way to check scope hole alignment?

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting a Unertl Ultra-Varmint scope centered when zeroed at 50 yards on a Pre-64 M70 target rifle. With a special made extended rear base the tube is almost against the left side of the mount and less then 12 MOA left. With the shorter base and just bore sight at 25 yards it has about 24 MOA left.

Is there an easy way to check the alignment? Thanks.

I'm not sure about the blocks. If both of them are on the barrel as I recall, take the scope off the rifle and use a metal yardstick along the sides of the blocks and see if the yardstick fits against the side of both blocks and then look to see if the yardstick is parallel with the barrel. The custom long block may have been drilled off axis. Something else to look for would be if the barrel was ever removed, reinstalled or replaced, it might be under or over-rotated. With the flatbottomed receiver sitting level on blocks, look down the rifle at the bases. If they are off level enough to need so much correction, you probably will be able to see it. If need be, you can set a precision level transverse across the blocks. If the receiver is leveled, the blocks should be too. If the level turned longways can span the 2 blocks, it may or may not indicate level, but the closer to flat and level they are with each other and the rifle, the better. The scope has to be able to gimbal some in the rings, but it's better if it initially aligns without any tilt or skew (with the elevation and windage knobs centered in their adjustment ranges).

Take care of that 2" Unertl. Fine scope.

Hope this helps. Tom
