eastern wa long range match ( sportsman's challenge )

We are currently working on putting a long range match together here in Eastern WA/ Northern Idaho. There will be animal shaped targets made of steel and some will have some plywood. The animals will most likely consist of prairie dogs, rabbits, crows, fox’s, bobcats and coyotes for the small game portion. Then the big game will consist of antelope, deer (mulie and whitetail), black bear, elk and maybe a moose. The ranges will go from 100-5 or 600 yards then 500-1000+. I think that this match should be a fun way to practice, hone or prove your skills when applying the long range practice to a hunting scenario. We all try as sportsman to make clean skills, so on the bobcats on up there will be steel swinging vitals. This will let the participant know he did make a good shot, it will also probably be worth more points in the match.

more recent info about this match:

It looks like it is going to be held by Athol, Idaho in the Panhandle National Forest. I received the application for permits today. I have been corresponding with the officials in the forest service and looks like we will be good to go once we have the event insurance taken care of and get our application in. it will take two months for processing, but everything looks good with that.

I have been getting some positive responses from some companies that would like to help out with making this a fun match. I may post some names further down the road. I am still working on getting more. I have also been getting some people that are interested in helping with setting up running it and really just wanting to be involved along with lots of people who are interested in participating in this event.

I have a friend who has access to a cnc plasma cutter that I dropped some steel off to, once he gets a cnc program In the mail he will have a bunch of shapes of animals that we can use for part of the targets. I am going to need to find some more steel. I am going to get some more of the 3/8" stuff this week and also pick up some 3/4" plywood for the larger targets we will have. I will need to try to find some decent 1/2" steel for our longer range targets where the larger more punishing calibers will be shot.

************One thing I am needing is a name for this match. Some of the stuff to keep in mind while thinking of one would be long range, hunting scenario with life sized animal targets (some with small precise areas on the target), we want to attract hunters that appreciate clean kills along with long range target shooters. The name of our website is longrangeshooter.com so think up something that sounds good. *************

******also we are going to have to start figuring out some dates to hold this match. with this we have to remember that the application takes 2 months to process so we won’t be doing anything in a month or probably even two, that puts us out at minimum may, also we won’t really be able to properly fill out the application with dates until we figure out a solid date. I would like to have a date figured out within two weeks by the latest. some time I would like to make this a bi annual event, but for the first time I would like to have a great turnout and see how everything goes before I try to plan a second match.******

If everyone interested could provide two good dates and/or a possible name for the match I would greatly appreciate it. This will get things rolling a bit better and also give us some info we will need for applications, sponsors to send things, people to plan this on their calendars.

you can either post here on this thread or e mail me at caleb@longrangeshooter.com

Re: match intrest

ill check out the club website and see what you guys have going on, it could be a lot of fun to do another f clas match some time. thanks for the dates we will deffinetly try to figure out some weekends that work for you. too bad you work weeekends, isnt that when most all your match's are?

that would be great if you could find some 1/2" steel i can find steel here at the big scrap yard, pretty hit or miss in sizes and kinds of hardness. i found some miscut 3/4" plywood here in town that i am gonna try to pick up today if i can.

have you been getting emails/ messages?

Thanks Caleb for all the foot work!!

Come on fellas,... I know there are some Idaho,Oregon, Washington, and Montana Guy's that could get involved in this and Canadians I am sure would be welcome as well, Start sending Caleb some feedback here, he is putting a lot of effort in putting this thing together for some great entertainment and good practice.
Wayne.

Re: eastern wa/ n idaho long range match ( sportsman's challenge )

thanks for the support wayne and yes if some canadians would like to come i think they would be more than welcome to come shoot up some of these targets.

i actually just got home a bit ago from meeting up with my buddy that has the access to the cnc machine and he is going to possibly start cutting some of the small game targets out tomorrow afternoon but no later than this friday. i got home and sent him dementions of the animals in life size form so they should be some great targets. i also started drawing up plans for auto ressetting pd, crow and rabbit targets as the bobcats and the coyotes will be the solid steel target with the vitals cut out and have a swinger plate with a flag to show when the vitals are hit. the cats and dogs will be steaked down.

i hope that this match is big enough to make for enough demand to maybe have another match this year, but at minimum have a huge turnout next year. we may have to double the amount of steel out there and find a bigger place ha ha ha got some good sponsors and have started talking to a couple about helping in years to come and they are very likely going to be doing that.

Re: eastern wa/ n idaho long range match ( sportsman's challenge )

Caleb,
I would think you could have several matches this year, with the addition of the State of Washington pre-killing off all of our wildlife by introducing non-native Wolves I think a life size wolf is definitely needed!

Re: eastern wa/ n idaho long range match ( sportsman's challenge )

well since the match will actually be held in idaho everyone could get an out of state tag and go out and try to get one after all the practice they will recieve the day of the match. everyone should have a good idea of where their rifles are shoting by the end of it.

maybe we can have one of those made up and have it as the bonus target?
make it life sized and painted up life like.

That looks like a good date. No clue as to what or where I'll be in June, but if I'm around I'll definitely consider it. I've been wanting to try one of these hunting matches. Thanks.

i am hoping that around that date there will be less preciptation in the ground, so we arent running into mud or any of that.

if you can, be in the area. there will be people from all over the area.

wayne,
maybe this bonus target could be your baby project. make it as real lokking as possible and we can place it out there and if they find it and make a good shot they can get a bonus points or something.
