East/Central Iowa gunsmith for savage rebarrel job recommendations?

Looking for a gunsmith that can do a rebarrel job, trigger work for me on my Savage in Eastern, possibly East central Iowa. I bought the action wrench and barrel nut wrench with the barrel just in case.

Any recommendations?

Not to be flippant, but you have all you need to do it yourself.

All you need is a once fired shell for headspace.

Remove old barrel nut and barrel. Insert once fired shell, put nut on barrel and screw barrel in receiver until touches shell snug, tighten nut. Careful, it has a tendency to tighten further during tightening.

On trigger, I adjust mine, but repalcement triggers are available also.

Just an idea.

Go over to savageshooters.com. They will help you out.

You have all the tools you need. Get on youtube and search for savage barrel change. The first time I changed a barrel was on the tailgate of my truck, at the range. Its a great feeling getting it done yourself. You can get after market barrels easily, that require no lathe or miling to headspace. You just tighten them down on a go gage or a fired brass and all is well!

IA-shooter, it is easy to change barrels on the Savages! All you have to have is the ability to read and a few necessary tools, which you have already, to do the job. As others have suggested, get the appropriate headspace gauge or once fired brass and you're well on your way to headspacing the new barrel!

You already have the special tools. Action wrench and barrel nut wrench. If it's really stuck on there you can heat the barrel nut with a torch.

While you can headspace with a fired case or three, and I've done it myself more than a few times, I find a gauge set (or at least a go) tends to be easier and more consistent. Set it with the go gauge, check the no-go. Once you get used to it the no-go stays in the toolbox, you'll get to the point you can set it with the go gauge where there is a very slight resistance on bolt close, then slip a chunk of thin plastic, like shopping bag plastic, under the case head and it gets tight, sort of like a cheap one size fits all no-go gauge.

Using the correct tools at first, and figuring out shortcuts later is probably better than trying shortcuts from the get go. If you are nervous about your first few tries, have someone whom you know double check your work.

Not saying it can't be done with properly sized or fired cases, its just easier to be more consistent with a real gauge. You can set it incorrect with a gauge as well, there is some technique and 'feel' required, that is what will trip you up at first.

For anyone not familiar with the gauge terminology, a 'go' gauge is the shortest, then 'no-go', then 'field' gauges are stupid ridiculously excessively long, there's no reason to purchase a 'field' length gauge for most of us.

Before you use a torch of any kind on the barrel nut, go buy a cheap electric heat gun. I got mine at Harbor Freight, works like a champ.
