Eagle Eye vs. Lapua 6mm Dasher

flexible

Silver $$ Contributor
Hi everyone flexible here. Starting to do my research on my next rifle build for 300/600 yard BR.
Looking at 6mm Dasher or 6mm BRA.
Has anyone tried Eagle Eye ammo? If yes, how does it stack up to Lapua - especially for reloading.
thanks

Since you mentioned ", especially for reloading", I can only suggest starting out with some of the quality Dasher/BRA brass that is available and going from there. But if you have a source for Lapua 6BR loaded ammo at a good price, that would work great for getting the 1st. 100 rounds through your barrel chambered for the BRA................Best of luck.

Regards
Rick

If you have H4895 I'd go with BRA for sure, Varget and Berger 105 Hybrids are available now and Dasher does very well with that combo, both cartriges do really good at 600/1K
Lapua 6BR Norma brass would be my first choice but you have to fireform....enjoy the ride.

From reading through some of their info, it appears that the brass they use is Alpha with their headstamp. Alpha is good brass. I saw ammo for 6 Dasher and GT but nothing for 6BR or BRA.

At a price of $2.50 to $3.50 per shot, reloading may be a good option. IF you have reloading tools.

I have shot about 300 rounds of Eagle Eye in a 6.5 CM they loaded with Alpha SRP and Berger bullets. It's top notch stuff and I would recommend them.

thanks everyone, lots of good advice. Can't believe the wait time for components - including rifle build times.

Keep your eye open in our classifieds. Many times sellers are moving on to something else and quality rifles can be purchased with brass, bullets, & barrels ready to go. If you get lucky enough and they are close enough to you, you may get a good supply of powder and primers as well.......Best Of Luck.

Rick

If you are just starting I would suggest a straight 6br first, or a 6br Ackley.
This is my 2nd year shooting 100/200 yard matches with a 6mm PPC; Group Bench Rest. Currently I live in NJ but moving to NC in about 2 years where the 6mm Dasher will be for 300/600 yard BR. No hurry on the build and i can do lots of research first.
thanks

Just curious. How much does a "build" cost these days? For a 300/600 br rig? Minus scope.

Just started my research, if anyone has ideas on costs or can recommend a smith I'll all ears.
Costs are relative to components and cosmetic desires. A laminate with a rattle can sealer will get the job done but won't be any where near as shiny as a full on automotive clear coat from a reputable painter. It will also cost $1000 (or more) less than a higher end stock/finish work.

From what I see at my shop is buyers come in two classes the sub $3500 build with quality components or the sub $8,000 build with quality components. I won't list "factory classes at a $1500 price point for what you seemingly want to do.

Try and figure out what you want to do with your rifle, how competitive you want to be (national competitor, vs weekend warrior) and let that guide you. Like most things performance, it takes very little money to get to 150 mph or say 1/2 MOA rifle, but to get to 250 MPH or 1/4 moa or better consistently, takes A LOT MORE. More on the rifle and more importantly, more on you in your training, reloading bench work, and wind reading. Don't expect to roll up on BR nationals in a untuned rifle at any price point and beat someone like Wayne Campbell or any other multiple time national champion or HOF shooter.

Here is a bullet list for BR parts

  • BAT DS or Borden B
    • $1650 with rail (+$300 if you want poilished)
  • Scarborough or Mataya Carbon Stock
    • $2000 (or more)
  • Inlet, Bedding, Chamber, Tuner with install work
    • $1750
  • Clear coat of the stock if the factory clear is damaged during inlet or other shop rash
    • $600 (or more if you have to ship it or want a higher quality paint job)
  • Barrel
    • $450
  • Trigger
    • $460
  • Total
    • $6910
Note: 600/1000 br is similar just with a different stock.

Now those prices are just estimates and are not intended to be a implied to any smith or builder. Just a quick perusal around the internet. However, it will get you in the ball park.

Well I can give you my costs. Just for curiosity sake.

Revolution br stock $599
Bat trigger guard $82
Trigger tech Diamond trigger $320 (or I can probably get you a Jewell)
Barrel $319
Nut $42

I would suggest a Kauger Arms BR2 left port load. I think those are $1100. That is the same as the polished action above.

This is a proven combination. Being shot in club matches all over the country. And doing quite well, in the right hands.

Here is a report from a customer after shooting at the Nationals.

If a man wants a full blown, high budget build, I send them to Greg Taylor. He's got the stuff!!

There are some of the best gunsmiths that are sponsors of Accurate Shooter, I'd definitely spend my money with one of them......support ppl that support our sport.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice. Just some personal background: I'm 75 so I'm not looking to go to a national championship. I was a competitive pistol shooter in my 20's, 30's & 40's and I won some local matches. The pistol shooting tailed off and i did lot of clays. Only started shooting BR and reloading rifle last year but improving and enjoying it. Went to a weekend BR seminar in April in NJ and received my first set of flags last week - i need to learn a lot about wind.
Probably like to keep the rifle and scope under $7 or $8k but the kids can inherit.
thanks again
