E target back up question

A couple of us, who have never shot on the E targets but who have shot and pulled targets, were wonder the other day what prevents a match director from reverting to using the target carriers and paper targets (where available) in the event of an E target failure as happened recently at Perry.

There most likely is an obvious answer that has escaped the threshold of our old gray heads.

Started a new thread since I didn't want to hijack the Pro and Con threads and had no knowledge base to comment on those topics.

Depends on the e-target system. On an SMT target, where the sensors are mounted externally to fairly conventional target frames, and can be readily detached... its not too hard to pull the sensors off and get the wiring out of the way. We did just that for a match (or two) last year when there were technical difficulties that couldn't be readily handled (and which have since been addressed).

For other designs... the e-targets have special target frames that are often quite a bit heavier / bulkier than conventional targets. Swapping them out is not quick or simple, and the ones I've handled would be a b*tch to try and do a conventional pull/paste match on.

Nothing- so long as the old manual targets are still available. As mentioned the SMT system seems easy to swap back to. The kongsbergs I know first hand are a little harder due to the mounting set up and weight of them. At the end of the day its all possible to work with. One Range I'm aware of is about to open and has done away with target pits and ET's just sit there. There is no contingency plan available if the system fails. Fingers crossed it doesnt happen but it makes me very nervous as a paying customer.
